36 Attorneys from Bernstein Shur Selected by Peers as "Best Lawyers in America"

Record number of selections represents 63 percent of firm's shareholders - one of the highest percentages among New England law firms

Nearly two-thirds of Bernstein Shur’s shareholders – 36 attorneys in all – have been selected by their peers for inclusion in the soon-to-be-released new edition of “The Best Lawyers in America ®," regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence in the United States. Six of the attorneys listed are included for the first time.

Inclusion in the 2007 edition of “The Best Lawyers in America,” www.bestlawyers.com, is considered a top honor as less than three percent of the nation’s lawyers are listed in the guide, which is organized by practice area. Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers® “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”

The number of Bernstein Shur attorneys cited has increased rapidly in recent years. The trend mirrors the firm’s success at extending its reach beyond Maine and reflects a growing reputation for delivering top-notch legal services throughout Northern New England and the United States, said Charlie Miller, the firm’s Managing Shareholder.

With 36 lawyers selected from the 85-member firm, Bernstein Shur topped its previous record of 31 lawyers in the last edition of Best Lawyers. Two years ago, 27 attorneys were selected. In the new edition, the 36 attorneys represent one of the highest percentages among large law firms in New England. In all, 63 percent of the firm’s 57 shareholders made the list – in 35 different practice areas – for the 2007 edition.

Leading the way are four Bernstein Shur attorneys who have been selected by their peers for 20 years or more: Leonard M. Nelson of Falmouth for Corporate Law; Gregory A. Tselikis of Scarborough for Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law; Peter J. Rubin of Scarborough, who was named in 11 categories, including for Appellate Law, Legal Malpractice and Medical Malpractice Law, Bet-the-Company Litigation, and several Litigation and Criminal Defense categories; and Gordon F. Grimes of Durham for Corporate Law, Construction Law, and Energy Law.

Bernstein Shur attorneys who have been selected for 10 years or more include: Robert J. Keach of Falmouth for Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law; Linda G. McGill of Freeport for Labor and Employment Law; Charles E. Miller of Portland for Real Estate Law; John M. R. Paterson of Freeport for Antitrust Law, Appellate Law and First Amendment Law; Eric F. Saunders of Cumberland for Corporate Law; Jeffrey A. Thaler of Yarmouth for Environmental Law, Natural Resources Law, Commercial Litigation, and Appellate Law; and Andru H. Volinsky of Concord, N.H., for Commercial Litigation, Education Law, White-Collar Criminal Defense, and Labor and Employment Law.

Attorneys who have been selected for the list for up to 10 years include: George F. Burns of Falmouth for Construction Law, Timber Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Commercial Litigation; Lee K. Bragg of Manchester, Maine, for Public Finance Law; John L. Carpenter of North Yarmouth for Corporate Law and Franchise Law; Paul Frinsko of Gorham for Public Finance Law, and Labor and Employment Law; Philip H. Gleason of Cumberland Foreside for Corporate Law; Leonard Gulino of Cape Elizabeth for Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law; James A. Houle of Scarborough for Employee Benefits Law and Trusts and Estates; Kenneth W. Lehman of Cumberland for Health Care Law; Karen B. Lovell of Saco for Tax Law, and Trusts and Estates; Jack Montgomery of South Freeport for Construction Law and Insurance Law; Patricia A. Peard of Falmouth for Labor and Employment Law; David P. Ray of Yarmouth for Construction Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution; Jaimie P. Schwartz of South Portland for Real Estate Law; Patrick J. Scully of Brunswick for Energy Law and Administrative Law; Nathan H. Smith of Portland for Real Estate Law; Nelson A. Toner of Portland for Tax Law; Wayne E. Tumlin of Cumberland for Corporate Law, Mergers & Acquisitions Law and Securities Law; Christopher L. Vaniotis of North Yarmouth for Municipal Law and Land Use & Zoning Law; and Lester F. Wilkinson, Jr. of Augusta for Real Estate Law.

Newly added Bernstein Shur attorneys are Michael Fagone of Saco for Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law; Tom S. Hanson of Cumberland for Real Estate Law; Wendy J. Harlan of Freeport for Mergers & Acquisitions Law; Daniel P. Riley, Jr. of Kennebunk for Government Relations Law; William M. Welch of Falmouth for Real Estate Law; and Richard W. Smith of Falmouth for Real Estate Law.

The nationally recognized list, which as been published since 1983, is now published each year by Woodward/White, Inc. of Aiken, South Carolina. To compile the list, over 24,000 attorneys across the U.S. were asked to rate the abilities of other lawyers in their areas of specialization. Only those attorneys who earned the consensus support of their peers were included in the listings; inclusion cannot be purchased. For this reason, selection in the Best Lawyers is considered a reliable and valued recognition.

Bernstein Shur is one of northern New England’s largest multi-service law firms, with 85 attorneys in Portland and Augusta, Maine and Manchester, New Hampshire. Established in 1915, the firm provides practical legal counsel to a diverse group of public and private clients throughout the region and around the world. Bernstein Shur’s commercial, litigation, and municipal practices are complemented by the services of the firm’s affiliates, which include Bernstein Shur Government Solutions LLC, a government consulting firm; Stratex LLC, an environmental and engineering consultancy; and Monument Title Company.
