40 Attorneys from Bernstein Shur Selected by Peers as 2008 "Best Lawyers in America"

More than two-thirds of firm's shareholders chosen for top honor

More than two-thirds of Bernstein Shur's shareholders - 40 attorneys in all - have been selected by their peers for inclusion in the soon-to-be-released new edition of "The Best Lawyers in America," regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence in the United States. Four of the attorneys listed are included for the first time.

Inclusion in the 2008 edition of "The Best Lawyers in America," www.bestlawyers.com, is considered a top honor as less than three percent of the nation's lawyers are listed in the guide, which are chosen by their peers and organized by practice area. Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers "the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice."

Best Lawyers also ranked Bernstein Shur as the #1 law firm in Maine in the following categories: Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law, Construction Law, Corporate Law, and Real Estate Law.

"The number of our attorneys recognized by Best Lawyers in America has increased due to the firm's continued reach beyond Maine," said Charlie Miller, the firm's Managing Shareholder. "Bernstein Shur has earned a reputation for providing practical and comprehensive legal services throughout Northern New England and the U.S.," he added.

With 40 shareholders selected from the firm, Bernstein Shur topped its previous record of 36 lawyers in the last edition of Best Lawyers. In all, more than 70 percent of the firm's principals made the list. Bernstein Shur has more than 90 attorneys in Maine and New Hampshire.

Heading the list are four Bernstein Shur attorneys who have been selected by their peers for 20 years or more: Leonard M. Nelson of Falmouth for Corporate Law; Gregory A. Tselikis of Scarborough for Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law; Peter J. Rubin of Scarborough, who was named in 12 categories, including for Appellate Law, Legal Malpractice and Medical Malpractice Law, Bet-the-Company Litigation, and several Litigation and Criminal Defense categories; and Gordon F. Grimes of Durham for Corporate Law, Construction Law, and Energy Law.

Bernstein Shur attorneys who have been selected for 10 years or more include: Robert J. Keach of Falmouth for Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law; Linda G. McGill of Freeport for Labor and Employment Law; Charles E. Miller of Portland for Real Estate Law; John M. R. Paterson of Freeport for Antitrust Law, Appellate Law and First Amendment Law; Eric F. Volinsky of Concord, N.H., for Commercial Litigation, Education Law, White-Collar Criminal Defense, and Labor and Employment Law; and Andrea K. Johnstone of Hopkinton, N.H., for Labor and Employment Law.

Attorneys who have been selected for the list for up to 10 years include: George F. Burns of Falmouth for Construction Law, Timber Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Construction Law and Commercial Litigation; Lee K. Bragg of Manchester, Maine, for Land Use & Zoning Law; John L. Carpenter of North Yarmouth for Corporate Law, Franchise Law, Corporate Governance and Compliance Law, and Mergers & Acquisitions Law; Michael A. Smith of Falmouth for Real Estate Law; Nelson A. Toner of Portland for Tax Law; Wayne E. Tumlin of Cumberland for Corporate Law, Leveraged Buyouts and Private Equity Law, Mergers & Acquisitions Law and Securities Law; Christopher L. Vaniotis of North Yarmouth for Municipal Law, Real Estate Law, Land Use & Zoning Law, Eminent Domain and Condemnation Law, and Administrative Law; William M. Newly added Bernstein Shur attorneys are Robert J. Crawford of Cumberland for Municipal Law; Geoffrey H. Hole of South Harpswell for Administrative Law; Arnold C. Macdonald of South Freeport for Corporate Law; and Robert F. Macdonald, Jr. of Cape Elizabeth for Franchise Law.

The nationally recognized list, which as been published since 1983, is now published each year by Woodward/White, Inc. of Aiken, South Carolina. To compile the list, over 25,000 attorneys across the U.S. were asked to rate the abilities of other lawyers in their areas of specialization. Only those attorneys who earned the consensus support of their peers were included in the listings; inclusion cannot be purchased. For this reason, selection in the Best Lawyers is considered a reliable and valued recognition.

Bernstein Shur is one of northern New England's largest multi-service law firms, with more than 90 attorneys in offices in Maine and New Hampshire. Founded in 1915, the firm provides practical and innovative counsel in the areas of business law, litigation, and municipal law to clients throughout the region and around the world.
