‘Maine 2015’ Symposium Today

What: Maine 2015, a Symposium on the Economic Future of Maine with three of the state’s top economists and Dartmouth economist Matthew Slaughter.

When: Wednesday, May 25, 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Where: Portland Museum of Art, 7 Congress Square

Who: Former Gov. Angus King, Counsel to Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, will moderate a panel discussion on the economics and politics of globalization and how capital investment strategies, tax policies, workforce training initiatives, and global forces will shape the State of Maine in the next 10 years.

Panelists include:

Matthew J. Slaughter, Associate Professor, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth
Professor Slaughter’s area of expertise is the economics and politics of globalization, with a specific focus on the labor market impacts of international trade and investment. He is a term member of the Council of Foreign Relations and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Slaughter’s work has been widely published in academic journals.

Charles Colgan, Professor, Muskie School of Public Service, USM
Professor Colgan served for 12 years in the Maine State Planning Office as both State Economist and Special Assistant to the Governor for International Trade. He teaches courses in economics, policy analysis, economic development, and analytic methods. His research focuses on issues of growth and development in Maine and New England.

Laurie G. Lachance, President and CEO, Maine Development Foundation
Ms. Lachance leads MDF, a highly-regarded nonprofit corporation charged with promoting economic development in the State. Ms. Lachance formerly served as the Maine State Economist for 11 years under the McKernan, King, and Baldacci Administrations, and was also the Corporate Economist for Central Maine Power Company.

Evan Richert, Associate Research Professor, Muskie School of Public Service, USM
Professor Richert is the former Director of the Maine State Planning Office, the policy and planning arm of state government. He specializes in issues involving regional and urban land use planning including sprawl, coastal resources, and governmental systems.
