BIO: Michael W. McNamara, President and CEO, Peoples Heritage Bank

Michael W. McNamara is President and Chief Executive Officer of Peoples Heritage Bank. Peoples Heritage Bank, a division of Banknorth, N.A., is Maine’s largest bank with $2.7 billion in deposits, and is headquartered in Portland. Banknorth, N.A., is the banking subsidiary of TD Banknorth Inc., a banking and financial services company headquartered in Portland, Maine, with assets of $28.7 billion.

Mr. McNamara joined Peoples in June 2000. His previous banking experience includes nine years with KeyBank, N.A., most recently as president of Key’s Maine affiliate, and 22 years with the Fleet Financial Group and The Merrill Bankshares Company. His responsibilities have encompassed such diverse areas as Chief Operating Officer, Corporate and Municipal Banking, Retail Banking, Marketing, and Branch Management and Administration.

In addition, Mr. McNamara has held leadership roles in strategic planning and many of the state’s largest banking mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. McNamara is actively involved in a variety of charitable and civic organizations including service on the Board of Directors of Maine Medical Center, Maine & Company, Maine Economic Research Institute, the Maine Association of Community Banks (Past Chair), Maine State Chamber of Commerce, and The Maine Life Care Retirement Community, Inc. (Past President). He also serves on the Advisory Boards of PCA Great Performances and The Board Network.

In the past Mr. McNamara has assumed leadership roles in a number of other philanthropic and community associations, including the Board of Directors of United Way of Greater Portland (Past Campaign Chair), The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Portland (Past President and Capital Campaign Chair), Portland Concert Association (Co-Chair Capital Campaign), Maine Bankers Association (Past President), and the Pine Tree Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He has also served on the American Bankers Association’s Government Relations Council as well as ABA’s Regional Consumer Banking Advisory Board. He was recognized for his community contributions as the recipient of the Spurwink Institute’s 1999 Humanitarian of the Year Award.

An economics graduate of the University of Maine, Mr. McNamara has also completed educational programs at the Northern New England School of Banking, The School of Banking at Williams College and the KeyCorp Leadership Institute.

Mr. McNamara and his wife, Pat, reside in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. They have two grown children.
