Bernstein Shur Bolsters Employment Law Practice with Addition of Prominent Maine Lawyer Linda McGill

McGill ranked as one of state's top labor and employment attorneys

PORTLAND, Maine – Linda D. McGill, one of Maine’s top labor and employment attorneys, will join Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, effective January 31, bolstering the firm’s growing employment law practice.

McGill is formerly a director at Moon, Moss, McGill & Shapiro in Portland, where she carved out a reputation as a lawyer skilled in the complexities of employment and labor relations law.

“Linda McGill’s strength is her deep understanding of the law and her ability to find practical solutions to complex labor matters,” said attorney Charles E. Miller, Bernstein Shur’s managing shareholder. “We are delighted to come to an agreement with a lawyer of such skill and reputation, and feel honored that she has decided to join the Bernstein Shur family.”

Bernstein Shur is one of northern New England’s largest law firms with 81 lawyers in offices in Portland and Augusta, Maine and in Manchester, New Hampshire. McGill will join the firm’s expanding Labor and Employment Law Practice Group, which represents public and private sector employers of all sizes, primarily in Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

McGill’s practice will include a range of issues, including matters governed by the NLRA and public sector labor laws; union management negotiations; Title VII, ADA and other discrimination law matters; workplace safety; executive compensation and employment contracts; and intellectual property issues in employment law.

A Freeport resident, McGill was recently ranked by the international legal publisher, Chambers & Partners, as one of the top labor and employment attorneys in Maine. She is also listed in Best Lawyers in America for labor and employment law.

McGill has taught and lectured extensively to lawyers and employer groups on compliance issues and the prevention and defense of employment law claims. She has published articles in business and legal journals on topics including sexual harassment law, labor arbitration, employee privacy and hiring and termination practices. She has taught employment discrimination law as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maine School of Law and has been active in integrating alternative dispute resolution procedures into the Maine Rules of Court.

McGill is the past co-chair of the Advisory Committee to the Volunteer Lawyers Project Committee. She is an immediate past member of the Maine Bar Foundation and is currently a Maine Bar Fellow. She has served as co-chair of the Women’s Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association and is currently the editor of the section’s newsletter. McGill also is a consultant with the International Senior Lawyers Project, based in New York, and in 2003 spent several months in New Delhi, India facilitating partnerships for pro bono assistance between private law firms in the U.S. and Europe and human rights lawyers in India.

McGill received her law degree in 1978 from the Northeastern University School of Law. She received her undergraduate degree from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, where she graduated magna cum laude in 1971.

Bernstein Shur’s Labor and Employment Practice Group defends the firm’s employer clients in the state and federal courts, and before the Maine Human Rights Commission, the National Labor Relations Board, and all other state and federal agencies that oversee labor and employment laws and regulations.

The 11-member group provides clients with expertise in a wide range of employment-related legal matters and litigation, including advice on workplace issues such as wage and hour questions, appropriate hiring, disciplinary and termination practices, employee benefits and contracts, severance agreements and grievance arbitration, and reductions in force and plant closings.

Bernstein Shur also provides legal services in all other major subject areas, including corporate and commercial law, litigation and trials, municipal and governmental affairs, education law, construction law, and tax and estate planning. The firm also has an active practice in bankruptcy, health law, environmental law, technology and commerce, legislative law, intellectual property, public utilities and other regulated industries.
