Bernstein Shur's Bob Keach Appointed VP for Education at American Bankruptcy Institute

Robert J. Keach, one of Maine’s leading bankruptcy attorneys and a shareholder at Bernstein Shur in Portland, was recently appointed Vice President for Education at the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI).

In the position, Keach will oversee 17 national and regional conferences for the ABI as well as special programs, seminars, and distance learning programs.
The ABI has more than 11,000 members throughout the United States who work in all areas of insolvency issues and professions. Keach received the appointment at the organization’s recent annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

In addition, Keach was recently published in the ABI Law Review, a national publication considered one of the most prestigious in the bankruptcy field.

Keach authored a piece about the constitutionality of the new individual Chapter 11, called “Dead Man Filing Redux: Is The New Individual Chapter Eleven Unconstitutional?”

Keach, a Falmouth resident who joined Bernstein Shur in 1994, is Chair of the firm’s Business Restructuring and Insolvency Practice Group. His practice focuses on the representation of various parties in workouts and bankruptcy cases including debtors, creditors, creditors’ committees, lessors, and third parties acquiring troubled companies and/or their assets.

Keach has been involved in a number of high-profile bankruptcies and restructurings in New England, including the recent Lincoln Paper and Tissue matter in Maine. Keach and the firm assisted a group of investors in the complex acquisition of the mill after it had languished in bankruptcy court for years. The transaction was completed despite myriad legal and business challenges, and the client recently acquired a new paper tissue machine – the first in the state in nearly 20 years.

A native of Concord, Vermont, Keach is a 1980 cum laude graduate of the University of Maine School of Law and a 1977 graduate of the University of Vermont. He is one of only four Maine attorneys recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America each year for more than 10 years for his work in bankruptcy and creditor-debtor rights, and by Chambers USA in their Corporate/M&A section.
