Businesses Wanted For February 2 'Job Shadow' Day
Third Annual Junior Achievement Event Sponsored by Peoples Heritage Bank
Portland-area businesses and organizations are wanted to sign up to host a class of middle- grade students in Junior Achievement's annual "Groundhog Job Shadow Day," held each year on Groundhog Day to allow young people to see what a real job is like.Sponsored by Peoples Heritage Bank and organized by Junior Achievement, the half-day event is geared toward sixth to eighth graders from schools in the greater Portland area. This year, more than 65 different classes have signed up and 25 workplace hosts have volunteered to participate.
"It's a great program that can always use more host businesses, so we're encouraging any that want to participate to call Junior Achievement," said David Ott, president and CEO of Peoples Heritage Bank.
Businesses and organizations wishing to be a workplace host may call Deborah Taylor at Junior Achievement, 773-5200, or contact her by e-mail at admin@jamaine.org.
Peoples, which has sponsored the event for two years as part of its "Peoples Promise" program for young people in the state, will host a class at its Lewiston offices at the Bates Mill. Other companies participating include IDEXX Laboratories, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine, Oakhurst Dairy, Diversified Communications, New England Rehabilitation Hospital, Bell Atlantic, Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram and UNUM.
