C.J. Sweeney’s Auldwood Polar Dip to Benefit Camp Sunshine Set for Saturday, March 10 at West Beach in Stamford, Conn.

Freezin’ for a Reason event to raise money to send more Connecticut children with life-threatening illnesses to Camp Sunshine, a one-of-a-kind retreat in Maine that serves the entire family

STAMFORD, Conn. (February 29, 2012) – The fourth annual C.J. Sweeney’s Auldwood Polar Dip to benefit Camp Sunshine is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 10 at West Beach in Stamford, Conn.

Hardy participants will take the plunge into the frigid waters of Long Island Sound to raise money to help send more families from Connecticut to Camp Sunshine (www.campsunshine.org), a one-of-a-kind national retreat in Maine for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Every participant is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 in pledges for Camp Sunshine and those who do will receive an “I DID IT!” t-shirt. All proceeds will benefit Camp Sunshine. To pledge online and for more information on the event, visit www.freezinforareason.com. West Beach Park is located at 818 Shippan Ave. in Stamford. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the plunge set for 10 a.m.

The goal for 2012 is to raise more than $10,000 – enough to send five families from Connecticut to Camp Sunshine. To support Camp Sunshine, please call (207) 655-3800 or visit www.campsunshine.org.

“We first organized the plunge because it sounded like something fun to do with our close-knit group of friends in Stamford,” said Kristyn O'Brien, co-creator of the Auldwood Polar Dip. “So our first year started with 10 plungers. We then decided that if we were going to jump into the freezing water of Long Island Sound, we may as well raise money for a good cause!”

In 2010, she said, 30 people plunged to raise money for the C.J. Sweeney Fund, which a year later connected organizers with Camp Sunshine. The Auldwood Polar Dip is sponsored by Manhattan Underwriting Agency and the non-profit organization Voice of an Angel, both located in Stamford.

Nestled alongside the shores of beautiful Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine, Camp Sunshine offers children with life-threatening illnesses and their families a place to relax together for a week and to take a break from the extraordinary demands placed on them on a daily basis.

The year-round program is free of charge and staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It is the only program in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family.

“The reality of this event is that the discomfort our plungers feel for just a moment will never compare to what our families go through during the course of their child’s illness. It’s for the families and children that we plunge... we call it Freezin’ for a Reason” said Michael Smith, Camp Sunshine’s Director of Special Events.

Who is C.J. Sweeney?
To everyone who knew him, lifelong Stamford resident C.J. Sweeney was a fighter, eager to show the world that he had abilities beyond disabilities. Until his death from leukemia on December 2, 2007, 14-year-old C.J. didn’t let anything stop him from achieving his goals, whether overcoming the incredible odds of his premature birth at 33 weeks or taking on the everyday challenges of living with Down syndrome with a smile on his face and a song in his heart.

Since Camp Sunshine opened in 1984, it has provided a haven for more than 35,000 family members from 48 states and 22 countries. In 2011, for example, 39 Connecticut families participated in Camp Sunshine’s program. Sadly, even with multiple sessions being added annually at Camp Sunshine, there are still many more children from Connecticut being newly diagnosed each year.

Camp Sunshine’s program continues to be recommended by the following Connecticut treatment centers: Connecticut Children's Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center, and Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital.

Camp Sunshine recently received a coveted 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the nation’s leading independent charity evaluator. The rating placed Camp Sunshine 39th in the country out of thousands of charities that were exhaustively analyzed for financial oversight, management and transparency.
