Chebeague Island Inn Purchased by Cumberland Woman
Auction Saturday, Sept. 27 to Benefit an Assisted Living Center on Island
The Chebeague Island Inn was purchased by Martha Dumont, a Maine native and resident of Cumberland, on Wednesday, Sept. 24.This Saturday, Sept. 27, a sale of the furnishings, linens, dishes and artwork will be held to benefit an assisted living facility on Chebeague Island.
A preview of the items will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the sale between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.
All proceeds from the sale will be donated directly to The Island Commons, a community-based facility on Chebeague Island.
The Inn will then embark on a renovation of the main building and gardens. The original inn opened in 1880 and the current inn dates back to 1925, rebuilt following a fire. The Chebeague Island Inn is perched on a hilltop overlooking Casco Bay, a short ferry ride from the greater Portland area.
The new owner of the Inn, Martha Dumont, is a Maine native, born and raised in Skowhegan. She now lives in Cumberland with her three children.
"As a resident of Cumberland, I would like to play a role in preserving the unique quality of life on the island. This inn is one of the last remaining on the Coast of Maine. I hope to restore the Inn in keeping with the history of these properties, while maintaining its role in the community," said Dumont.
