Conference to Focus on Preparing for Water Supply Contamination Emergencies

January 16 event sponsored by Stratex LLC and two water associations in Maine

With the backdrop of America's heightened concerns about terrorism, Stratex, LLC, an environmental consulting firm with offices in Augusta and Portland, together with the Maine Rural Water Association and the Maine Water Utilities Association are sponsoring a conference next month about preparing for a water supply emergency.

The conference is open to the media, and will bring together water supply managers, public officials and experts to discuss management of catastrophic contamination. Titled "Managing Water Supply Contamination Emergencies in Maine: Detection, Response, Communications and Planning," the conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, at the Augusta Civic Center. The cost - including lunch and two snacks - is $60 per person for representatives of utilities, municipalities, government agencies and non-profits, and $80 for others. For more information, please contact Keith Taylor in Augusta at (207) 623-1596 or Bob Gerber in Portland at (207) 780-9698.

"Terrorism has reminded us of the vulnerability of our public water supplies," said Taylor, a technical consultant for Stratex. "But catastrophic contamination can also occur from more common sources, including chemical or petroleum spills, vandalism, backflow accidents, and treatment system failure."

Indeed, a truck accident this year dumped 5,600 gallons of oil into Sanborn Pond in Maine, and two years ago an E. coli outbreak from treatment-system failure killed five people in Ontario, Canada.

Topics will include:
- standard and new technologies for early detection of contamination
- federal and state roles in emergency response
- system shutdown and disinfection
- planning for a backup supply
- communicating with customers and the media
- water utility liability and insurance

Scheduled speakers include representatives from the Maine Department of Human Services, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Maine Emergency Management Agency, Marsh USA Risk Services, and the law firm Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson.

Established in 1998, Stratex is a technical consulting subsidiary of Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, one of northern New England's largest law firms. Stratex provides expert engineering and geologic evaluation for clients involved with energy development, sewer and water projects, solid waste management issues, groundwater supply development and protection, and coastal engineering projects. The company has a large role in the environmental aspects of the decommissioning of the Maine Yankee nuclear plant.

Stratex, LLC is located at 100 Middle Street in Portland and at 146 Capitol Street in Augusta. For more information, visit its web site at http://www.stratexllc.com.
