Debby Hammond Elected President of Gould Academy Board of Trustees

First Woman to Serve in the Post

BETHEL, Maine - Deborah F. Hammond became Gould Academy's first woman to serve as president of the Board of Trustees on Saturday, May 3, 2003.

A resident of Cumberland Foreside and a 1961 graduate of Gould Academy, Hammond has served since 1984 on the Board of Trustees at Gould, a 166-year old private boarding school providing a traditional and innovative college preparatory education to about 220 students in grades 9-12.

A 1965 graduate of Grove City College in Pennsylvania, Hammond received a master's in Music Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1966.

She taught in the choral and general music programs at junior high schools in Portland and South Portland for five years before becoming the public relations director and auction producer for WCBB-TV in Lewiston. Hammond then served as director of marketing and development at the Portland Symphony Orchestra, a position from which she recently retired after 21 years.

"A long list of accomplishments and awards is testimony to Deborah's ongoing commitment to her alma mater," said Dan Kunkle, headmaster of Gould Academy in Bethel.

Hammond served on Gould Academy's Alumni Board of Directors, including a two-year term as its president from 1981-1983, joined the Board of Trustees the following year, and became a charter trustee in 1991. A four-year term as secretary of the Board of Trustees was followed by six years as Vice President, from 1997-2003. She has chaired the Board's Education Committee and, in 2000, co-chaired the Head of School Search Committee.

Over the years, Hammond has put her considerable talent for fundraising to work for Gould Academy in many ways, including serving as chair of the Leadership Gift Committee and as co-chair of The Campaign for Gould Academy's Future, the school's recently concluded $17.2 million capital campaign.
In 1994, Hammond received Gould Academy's Alumna of the Year Award, presented annually to the alumna or alumnus who represents the high ideals established by the Alumni Board of Directors, and in 2002 her dedication and leadership were again recognized with the presentation of the Michael S. Stowell Volunteer Award, an honor given only periodically to a member of the Gould family who demonstrates extraordinary volunteer service over a long period of time.

"I am privileged to have this opportunity to serve Gould Academy, and know it will be one of the greatest pleasures of my life," Hammond said. "Gould Academy is a singular institution in the realm of boarding school secondary education and is a vibrant example of how an independent community of talented people can achieve great success in educating and developing its students."

Hammond succeeds Alan B. Ordway, Gould Academy Class of 1958, a trustee since 1974 and President of the Board of Trustees since 1979. Ordway is a 1962 graduate of Yale University and was a U.S. Naval Officer from 1962-1965. With his wife, Michelle, and children, Laura and Spencer, both graduates of Gould Academy, he has owned and operated Winona Camps in Bridgton for more than 35 years.

"Al Ordway's 24-year leadership of the Board of Trustees has provided immeasurable strength to Gould Academy," said Hammond. "With Al at the helm and his philosophy of 'anything for Gould,' the school has grown in stature, expanded the depth and breadth of its academic programs, achieved great successes on the playing fields and mountain slopes, and nurtured its faculty and administrators. Al is a teacher and a coach, who enriches the lives of all who have the good fortune to work with him, and he has given generously of himself to all who serve Gould Academy. Al will always be honored as one of the most important figures in the history of the Academy."

Founded in 1836, Gould Academy provides a traditional and innovative college preparatory education to about 220 students in grades 9-12. While most of the students come from New England, about 30 percent come from the remaining 49 states and 10 percent from Europe and Asia.

Long known for its competitive skiing and innovative arts, computer technology, and experiential programs, Gould's mission is to inspire young men and women to achieve high standards in their academic, artistic, and athletic pursuits; to demonstrate responsibility to the community; and to explore the natural world.
