Dragon Cement and Concrete Names Winners of Annual Safety Poster Contest

Four Maine children were recently named the winners in Dragon Cement and Concrete’s annual safety poster contest, aimed at promoting safety in the workplace as well as at home.

A record number of 67 children this year entered the contest, open to children or grandchildren of the more than 225 Dragon employees throughout Maine. Prizes were awarded in three age categories and one overall best slogan category.

The four winners received a $75 gift certificate to Wal-Mart. Each participant in the contest also received an L.L. Bean backpack with the Dragon logo.

“We were quite impressed by the posters these kids entered,” said Terry Veysey, CEO of Dragon Products. “They really understood the theme and the artwork was phenomenal.”

The winners were: Shania Gagnon, 8, of Van Buren, daughter of Philip Gagnon, Jr., who works at the Presque Isle concrete plan; Daniel Hendricks, 10, and Brittany Young, 12, both of Rockland and children of John Hendricks, who works in the Thomaston plant; and, in the best slogan category, Jonathan Williams, 11, of Rockport, grandson of Don Cayton, who also works at the Thomaston plant. His slogan is: Doing Reckless Acts Gets One Nowhere.

The posters were judged by staff at Dragon’s corporate headquarters in Portland and at the Thomaston plant. The ballots, which were anonymous, were then combined and tallied to find the winner. Winning posters can be viewed on the company’s web site at www.dragonproducts.com.

Headquartered in Portland, Dragon employs more than 225 full-time employees statewide. The only cement plant in New England, Dragon cement is supplied to most ready-mix companies in the state, and others throughout New England by barge through Coastal Cement terminals in Newington, N.H. and Boston. Dragon also has ready-mix concrete plants in Biddeford, Westbrook, Portland, Lewiston, Brunswick, Augusta, Canton, Fairfield, Madawaska and Presque Isle.
