Dragon Cement and Concrete has been awarded the contract to supply concrete for construction of the new Land Level Transfer Facility for Bath Iron Works in Bath.

The project is scheduled for completion in January 2001. When completed, the structure, which includes caissons and a 14-acre concrete pad on concrete piles, will allow up to three ships to be constructed side by side at the same time at the Bath Iron Works construction site along the Kennebec River. The Land Level Transfer Facility also will include a 75,000-square-foot operations building.

Dragon is supplying an estimated 60,000 cubic yards of 4,000 PSI and 5,000 PSI concrete for the project from its Brunswick facility. The firm of Atkinson Construction, a division of Guy F. Atkinson Construction Corporation, is serving as the general contractor for the project. The design/build team is Clark Builders of Maine, LLC.

As New England's only cement manufacturer, Dragon supplies cement and/or concrete to many major building projects throughout the state and region. The company employs about 250 statewide and has 10 ready-mix concrete plants throughout Maine. Other recent Dragon projects include providing some of the cement for the "Big Dig" in Boston, supplying all of the cement and most of the concrete for the new Casco Bay Bridge linking Portland and South Portland and the Brunswick/Topsham Bypass on Route 1.
