Gould Academy Names John Kerney as Director of Admissions and External Affairs

John Todd Appointed Director of Communications

BETHEL, Maine - Gould Academy has named John A. Kerney as director of admissions and external affairs. He will be responsible for overseeing the school's departments of admission, communications and development.

Formerly of the business world, Kerney most recently served as president and chief operating officer of Security Source, Inc. in Peabody, Mass. He also has served as chief operating officer of Gordon Brothers Group in Boston; was founder and president of SmartBargains.com in Boston and vice president of State Street Bank and Trust Co. in Boston. He is a resident of Bethel.

"John Kerney brings with him a wealth of entrepreneurial experience and expertise to this position," said Dan Kunkle, Gould's headmaster. "His lifelong passion for private secondary education coupled with his creativity and experience in building enterprises will be a great addition as we continue to position Gould as a premier small prep school. His diverse background will also add to the rich experience and education that we are committed to providing at Gould."

Kerney, a native of Tuxedo Park, N.Y., is a graduate of The Taft School in Watertown, Conn., and Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt.

Gould also appointed John H. Todd, a Bethel resident and 1960 graduate of Gould, as director of communications. In his new role, he will be responsible for all internal and external marketing and communications for the school.

Formerly chief development officer and director of capital gifts, Todd joined Gould in 1984 and recently directed the academy's $17.2 million capital campaign.

"John Todd is a true asset to Gould, and we look forward to his contributions in this new and vital role," said Kunkle. "Under his leadership, Gould Academy has raised millions of dollars since his arrival 19 years ago. As a result, the school has a new state of the art science center, a totally renovated girls' dormitory, a new dining facility, and many more visible examples of the Gould family's philanthropic generosity."

Founded in 1836, Gould Academy provides a traditional and innovative college preparatory education to about 220 students in grades 9-12. While most of the students come from New England, about 30 percent come from the remaining 49 states and 10 percent from Europe and Asia.

Long known for its competitive skiing and innovative arts, computer technology, and experiential programs, Gould's mission is to inspire young men and women to achieve high standards in their academic, artistic, and athletic pursuits; to demonstrate responsibility to the community; and to explore the natural world.
