Gould Academy Appoints John Todd Director of Communications

BETHEL, Maine - Gould Academy has appointed John H. Todd, a Bethel resident and 1960 graduate of Gould, as director of communications. In his new role, he will be responsible for all internal and external marketing and communications for the school.

Formerly chief development officer and director of capital gifts, Todd joined Gould in 1984 and recently directed the academy's $17.2 million capital campaign.

"John Todd is a true asset to Gould, and we look forward to his contributions in this new and vital role," said headmaster Dan Kunkle. "Under his leadership, Gould Academy has raised millions of dollars since his arrival 19 years ago. As a result, the school has a new state of the art science center, a totally renovated girls' dormitory, a new dining facility, and many more visible examples of the Gould family's philanthropic generosity."

Founded in 1836, Gould Academy provides a traditional and innovative college preparatory education to about 220 students in grades 9-12. While most of the students come from New England, about 30 percent come from the remaining 49 states and 10 percent from Europe and Asia.

Todd is a 1964 graduate of Tufts University in Medford, Mass and first came to Bethel in the 1950s to study at Gould. He is originally from East Boothbay, Maine. He is a trustee of the Bethel Library and a pro-bono advisor to The Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn.

Before joining Gould, Todd was a 20-year career Naval Officer who says he always had returning to the Academy in the back of his mind. In 1984 that goal became a reality.

"I never knew how long I would remain at Gould Academy once I started," Todd said, "but the place simply continued to grow on me, while enabling me to educate my three children at my alma mater. It became a second career about which I feel just as passionate as my first."

Long known for its competitive skiing and innovative arts, computer technology, and experiential programs, Gould's mission is to inspire young men and women to achieve high standards in their academic, artistic, and athletic pursuits; to demonstrate responsibility to the community; and to explore the natural world.
