Gould Academy Hosts Presidents' Week Open House

Weeklong event - Feb. 17-21 - held at both Bethel, Maine campus and GSR Competition Center at Sunday River Ski Resort

BETHEL, Maine (February 10, 2003) - Gould Academy will host a weeklong Open House on February 17-21 to acquaint prospective students and their families with the Bethel, Maine campus and its competitive on-snow program and facilities at nearby Sunday River Ski Resort.

No appointment is needed to participate in any of the events. For more information, people may contact the Admissions Office - (207) 824-7777 or admissions@gouldacademy.org - or visit the Gould Academy website at www.gouldacademy.org.

Founded in 1836, Gould Academy provides a traditional and innovative college preparatory education to about 220 students in grades 9-12. Nearly half the students are from Maine, another 15 percent from throughout New England, and the remaining from other parts of the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

The Admissions Office, located on Church Street in Bethel, will be open each day, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with refreshments available throughout the day. Tours of the campus will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and will include lunch in Gould's Ordway Dining Hall. The events are open to any interested students and their families.

An exhibit of architectural drawings by Gould alumnus Brian Callahan, class of 1995, will be on display in the Owen Art Gallery daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and formal tours of the new 22,000-square-foot McLaughlin Science Center will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.

Visitors may inquire at the Admissions Office about Gould's 25 kilometers of groomed cross country trails.

Also, participants can get a jumpstart on Open House activities at the Gould/Sunday River Competition Center, located adjacent to the Barker Mountain Base Lodge at Sunday River Ski Resort six miles from campus. Beginning this Saturday, Feb. 15, the facility will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily through Friday, Feb. 21. Refreshments will be served. A reception and information session is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be served, and Gould staff will be on hand to answer questions about the school's academic, athletic, and residential programs.

Long known for its competitive skiing and innovative arts, computer technology, and experiential programs, Gould's mission is to inspire young men and women to achieve high standards in their academic, artistic, and athletic pursuits; to demonstrate responsibility to the community; and to explore the natural world.
