Graystone Builders of Maine Donates $3,000 to Support New Transportation Program for Seniors in York

YORK, Maine - Graystone Builders of Maine, Inc. has donated $3,000 to the York Senior Center to support a new transportation program that has begun serving seniors in York and surrounding communities.

The donation will go into an enterprise fund that will be used to supplement town funding for the program and help finance the purchase of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, said Sheila Chaney, director of the York Senior Center.

Walter Woods, president of Graystone Builders, presented a $3,000 check to Chaney during a formal ceremony recently to kick off the fundraising effort.

"We're very appreciative that Graystone stepped forward," Chaney said. "Walter is someone who takes a sincere interest in his community and we couldn't be more pleased with his generosity. It will be put to good use."

The transportation program, which currently includes one part-time driver and a donated sedan, provides rides to seniors for grocery shopping and other errands, and to and from the York Senior Center, a multi-purpose daytime facility serving 730 seniors in the Seacoast.

Chaney said Woods initially offered to donate funds for needed repairs to the York Senior Center. After selectmen decided to fully fund the repairs, she said, Woods instead directed his donation to assist the new transportation program.

"Transportation really is a key component to helping ensure that seniors continue to live full lives," Woods said. "We were more than happy to help out."

Graystone Builders is a leading designer and builder of custom homes in the Seacoast. Since 1984, the company has built more than 200 custom homes, including Woodbridge Estates, a 26-home subdivision and Spring Pond Estates, a 32-home retirement community in York.

For more information about the transportation program, contact Sheila Chaney at the York Senior Center at 363-1036, or send donations directly to: York Senior Center, 36 Main Street, York, Maine 03909.
