January 19 Water Conference in Augusta Sponsored by Stratex LLC

Event to feature more than 10 speakers

Registration is still open for a day-long seminar on water regulation issues facing Maine, designed for representatives from water-dependent businesses, water utilities, farming, tourism and other industries or organizations who withdraw water from rivers, ponds or the ground.

The conference will cover current water withdrawal laws and how proposed new regulations will affect large and small users.

Organized and presented by Stratex, LLC, an environmental consulting subsidiary of Bernstein Shur, the conference is entitled “Regulation of Water Withdrawals in Maine: What Should Water Users Expect?” and will feature more than 10 speakers from state and federal government, the Maine Water Utilities Association, the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission, Stratex, LLC and Bernstein Shur. (A complete list of speakers is below and a brochure is attached)

The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. January 19 at the Augusta Civic Center, and is also is sponsored by the Maine Water Utilities Association. The cost is $60 for members of non-profits and government organizations, and $85 for others. The fee includes lunch and a morning and afternoon snack. Media are invited to attend.

Persons interested in attending may call Keith Taylor at the Stratex offices in Augusta, (207) 623-1596, or Bob Gerber at Stratex in Portland at (207) 780-9698.

“The topic is important because the regulation of water withdrawals in Maine could affect public safety and health, economic growth, business risk, and tourism,” said Taylor. “At the same time, it’s important to protect our natural resources, which is a high priority for most Mainers.

Topics will include basic stream flow mechanics and ecology, where Maine and other states stand currently with respect to water withdrawal laws, and a panel discussion in the afternoon on differing perspectives on water withdrawal.

Speakers will include Bob Marvinney of the Maine Geological Survey, Brandon Kulik of Klienschmidt, Joan Trial of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission, Robert Gerber of Stratex, Greg Cunningham of Bernstein, Shur, Mark Margerum and Andrew Fisk of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Robert Dudley of the U.S. Geological Survey, Ralph Abele of the US EPA, Wayne Ives of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, Karl Honkonen of the Maiss. Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, Jeff McNelly of the Maine Water Utilities Association, and John Harker of the Maine Department of Agriculture.

Established in 1998, Stratex is a technical consulting subsidiary of Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, one of northern New England's largest law firms with 81 lawyers in three locations. Stratex provides expert engineering and geologic evaluation for clients involved with energy development, sewer and water projects, solid waste management issues, groundwater supply development and protection, and coastal engineering projects.
