Kate Debevoise Re-appointed to Board of Arbitration and Conciliation by Gov. King

Kate S. Debevoise, an attorney and shareholder at the statewide law firm of Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, has been re-appointed to the Maine Board of Arbitration and Conciliation by Gov. Angus King. She will serve as the employer representative to the board, which resolves collective bargaining agreement disputes and individual grievances of governmental employees.

A member of Bernstein, Shur's Litigation Department and its Labor and Employment Law Group, Debevoise concentrates her practice on employment law and business-related litigation in state and federal courts and
agencies.

Debevoise's practice covers discrimination, sexual harassment, hiring and termination practices, employment contracts and non-compete agreements and other workplace issues. She was instrumental in the recent federal discrimination case that ended with a jury in Portland awarding $1 million to her client, a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service.

Debevoise joined Bernstein, Shur in 1987. She is active in the Employment Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association and has lectured for the bar and other legal and business organizations on employment issues, including hiring, discipline and termination procedures, drug testing, sexual harassment, employee fraud, privacy issues and discrimination. A 1987 graduate of Suffolk University Law School in Boston, Debevoise received her undergraduate degree from Kenyon College in Ohio.

A resident of Yarmouth, Debevoise chairs the town's Zoning Board of Appeals. She also is a member of the Greater Portland YMCA Board of Directors and serves on its Executive and Human Resources committees.

Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson is one of the state's largest law firms with 60 attorneys in offices in Portland and Augusta. The firm provides legal services in all major practice areas, including corporate and commercial law, litigation and trials, municipal and governmental affairs, and tax and estate planning. Bernstein, Shur also has an active practice in health law, environmental law, technology and commerce, employment law, securities law, legislative law, intellectual property, public utilities and other regulated industries.
