Martin's Point Endowed Scholarship Awarded at St. Joseph's College

Janet Dyroff of Phippsburg receives 2001-2002 award

Janet Y. Dyroff, a nursing student at St. Joseph's College in Standish, has received the 2001-2002 Martin's Point Endowed Scholarship, an annual award established in 1993 by Martin's Point Health Care, the state's largest not-for-profit primary care practice.

Dyroff, a Phippsburg resident who works as a nurse at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, received the scholarship for demonstrating "a potential for leadership, responsibility and decision-making in the professional nurse role." The scholarship is granted to a St. Joseph's student who is a resident of Maine or New Hampshire and has at least three years of vocational experience. Preference is given to part-time students who demonstrate financial need.

"Janet Dyroff is an honors student with an outstanding record of academic and professional achievement," said Kathy Ross, the clinical nursing supervisor at Portland-based Martin's Point. "We're pleased to provide support for the profession of nursing, which is an integral part of our approach to compassionate, quality health care."

Dyroff has nine years in nursing, including work at two hospitals in New York. She earned an associate's degree in nursing in 1993 from Orange County Community College in Middletown, N.Y. She will receive her bachelor's degree in nursing from St. Joseph's in May, and also is a business student at Husson College in Bangor.

Dyroff is a member of the American Nurse Association, the Maine State Nurse Association and Sigma Theta Tau International. In addition, she is the coordinator for the Meals on Wheels program in the Phippsburg area. A native of Wilton, she is a 1969 graduate of Wilton Academy.

Established in 1981, Martin's Point is a not-for-profit health care provider with facilities in Portland, Brunswick and Windham, Maine, and in Portsmouth, N.H. Martin's Point has a staff of more than 300 health care professionals and serves 54,000 patients - including military retirees and dependents of active military personnel - under all major health plans.

Martin's Point serves patients in the areas of family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, radiology, cardiology, and mammography, as well as other fields. In addition, Martin's Point continues to attract attention for its innovative approach to health care. Patients Personal Points, an interactive, Internet-based system that allows Martin's Point patients to communicate online with their doctors, has won numerous national and regional awards, including from the Healthcare Innovations in Technology Systems (HITS) Partnership in Technology national awards program.
