Martin's Point Expands Internet-Based Service to Greater Portland

Each of the 47,000 patients served by Martin's Point now have access to cyberlink with doctors and nurses

(PORTLAND, Maine) - Martin's Point Health Care, Maine's largest primary care practice, is now offering its breakthrough online service to more than 20,000 patients throughout the greater Portland area.

The introduction of Patient's Personal Points at the health care center in Portland means each of the 47,000 patients served by Martin's Point now can set up free, personal medical Web pages enabling them to ask their doctor questions, make appointments, request prescription renewals and receive personalized medical information - confidentially - with a click of a mouse on their personal computers. Martin's Point also has health care centers in Brunswick and Windham, Maine, and in Newington, N.H.

Patient's Personal Points is a secure, Internet-based communications system that creates a cyberlink between doctors, nurses and patients, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The aim is to create a healthier and better-informed clientele, according to Dr. David Howes, president and chief medical officer of Portland-based Martin's Point Health Care.

"This breakthrough technology has proven itself useful to our patients by making our practice accessible to them around the clock," Dr. Howes said. "Our doctors and staff, as well, have another avenue of communication with patients. The benefits are clear."

Martin's Point first offered Patient's Personal Points in its health care centers serving smaller patient bases. In Brunswick, Windham and Newington, N.H., about 2,100 patients are registered. The rollout in greater Portland is the final step and secures Martin's Point's place as the most innovative user of technology in Maine's health care community. Already in October, more than 900 patients in greater Portland have registered.

Martin's Point continues to attract widespread attention for its high-tech initiatives, which also include a robot pharmacist to assist in dispensing prescriptions. The robot, named Spence, is a 12-by-7-foot machine that fills an average of 270 prescriptions a day, allowing pharmacists to spend more time with doctors and patients.

"We are constantly looking for ways to improve service and save time using technology," Howes said. "The future of medical care is now, and I'm proud to say that we've been able to remain out front."

Martin's Point recently won a national technology award for Patient's Personal Points from the Healthcare Innovations in Technology Systems (HITS) "Partnership in Technology" national awards program. The service was created by MediVation, Inc., of Needham, Mass.

The confidential communications can be initiated by either the enrolled patient through their personal medical web page or by facility staff, all in a password-protected area on the Martin's Point web site. To view a demo of the service, go to www.martinspoint.org and click on the yellow 'login' box, then 'preview.'

Established in 1981, Martin's Point Health Care is the largest non-profit primary care practice in the state. The organization employs 290 healthcare professionals who serve 47,000 patients in Portland, Windham, Brunswick and in Newington, N.H. Headquartered in Portland at 331 Veranda Street, Martin's Point accepts all major health plans and insurance, including but not limited to HealthSource, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Harvard Community Health Plan, Maine Partners, Champus, Tricare, Aetna, Cigna and NYLCare Plans.
