PORTLAND, Maine – Martin’s Point Health Care has donated more than $13,000 worth of medical equipment to help with the humanitarian crisis in Haiti.

The equipment donation includes a monitor sigmoidoscope, used for diagnostic testing, medical refrigerator to store medications and vaccines, and a sterilizer, used for sterilizing surgical instruments and surgical/procedure packs.

The donation is part of an effort organized by the Maine Medical Center on behalf of Konbit Sante, a volunteer medical group headed by Michael Taylor, M.D. that has been working to build a sustainable health care delivery system in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. Martin’s Point is also donating medical services to care for a 6-year-old orphan boy from Haiti who came to Maine for eye surgery and treatment and other medical problems.

“As a non-profit health provider, it’s important to help people who are in such dire need, and we are pleased to be able to make a contribution that will make a difference,’’ said Dr. David H. Howes, President of Martin’s Point Health Care.

Other contributions from Maine to the Konbit Sante group include a culposcope from Harry Bennert, an autoclave from John Dhyrberg, echocardiogram supplies from Cardiovascular Consultants of Maine, dermatology supplies from Dermatology Associates, and orthopedic equipment from Orthopaedics Associates.

Established in 1981, Martin’s Point is a not-for-profit health care provider with facilities in Portland, Brunswick and Windham, Maine, and in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and serves patients in the areas of family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, radiology, cardiology, and mammography, as well as other fields.
