Martin's Point Health Educator to Represent Maine at National Conference

Will Push for Medicare to Cover Medical Nutrition Therapy

Colette C. Michaud, Health Education Coordinator for Martin's Point Health Care in Portland, will represent Maine at the American Dietetic Association's (ADA) annual public policy workshop March 7 in Washington, D.C. to campaign for medical nutrition therapy coverage under Medicare.

Michaud, a licensed and registered dietitian, is one of three dietitians being sent to the conference by the Maine Dietetic Association. She and others will meet to develop strategies on how best to obtain Medicare coverage for medical nutrition therapy.

"Nutrition therapy is a very important part of good health, especially for older Americans," said Michaud. "Good nutrition can prolong lives and enhance the quality of life."

Health Education Coordinator for Martin's Point Health Care since August 1998, Michaud's major responsibilities include overseeing patient health education, coordinating dietitian referrals and diabetes education, program planning and development, community outreach and directing Health Education Center activities.

Michaud, who has 10 years of public health experience, earned a master's in health science and health administration in 1998 from Towson University in Towson, Md. Before joining Martin's Point Health Care, she served as project director for a National School Meals Initiative Team Nutrition Training Grant, and program specialist for Child Nutrition Programs for the Maryland State Department of Education.

A resident of Portland, Michaud is a member of the Maine Dietetic Association, the American Dietetic Association, the Maine School Health Education Coalition, and Programs Committee of the Maine Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Martin's Point Health Care, based in Portland at 331 Veranda St., also has clinics in Windham, Topsham and Bath and in Newington, N.H. Established in 1981, Martin's Point has a staff of 240 health care professionals, serving approximately 43,000 patients in the areas of family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, radiology, cardiology, mammography and other fields. Martin's Point is a primary care group practice dedicated to forming clinician/patient relationships that guide medical decision-making.
