PORTLAND, Maine - The Mammography Department at the Martin's Point Health Care facility in Portland has received re-accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for the acheivement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of its practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment.

The accreditation, issued earlier this month, is conducted every three years to assess mammography-imaging capabilities. The distinction means the Radiology Department in Portland passed an intensive process that included a review of records and credentials as well as an inspection of the machine and the quality of films.

"Preventing breast cancer through early detection through mammography is one of our most important services," said Dr. David Howes, Martin's Point president. "The ACR accreditation is an indication of the high qualify of performance of our radiology team as well as our facilities and equipment."

The radiology department consists of a manager, Holly Glidden, and three technologists, Jessie Cash, Martha Greenleaf and Marlene Hult.
