Martin's Point Physician Named Family Practice Specialist by National Board

William F. Schirmer, M.D., a family physician at Martin's Point Health Care, was recently certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice (ABFP), the certifying body for the specialty of family practice.

Family physicians earn diplomate status by passing the ABFP's certification examination, an intensive written test of a physician's knowledge in pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, psychiatry, prevention and other aspects of family practice.

Dr. Schirmer has been a family practice physician since 1983. A resident of Falmouth, he is based in the Martin's Point facility in Portland. Dr. Schirmer and his wife, Julie, have two children.

"I bring to my practice an interest in preventative health for the whole family," Schirmer said. "As I trained in Portland and have practiced here for 17 years, I have an intimate knowledge of the hospitals and specialists available. This enables me to guide my patients through the local health care system."

The specialty of family practice combines the latest in medical technologies with a long tradition of caring and service. Family physicians are educated and trained to care for the whole person, treating the majority of medical problems of both genders and all ages. Dr. Schirmer was first certified in 1985.

Family practice was recognized in 1969 as a medical specialty by the American Medical Association and the American Board of Medical Specialities. Family practice was the first specialty to require its diplomates to recertify by taking re-certification exams every six years.

Schirmer received his M.D. from Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C., in 1980. He completed both his residency and internship in family practice at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Schirmer also received an M.S. in biology from Georgetown University in 1973, and a B.S. in psychology/pre-med from Colby College in Waterville in 1971. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, the first medical specialty organization to require its members to earn 150 hours of approved continuing medical education every three years.

"I have been fascinated by the field of medicine since I was seven years old," Schirmer said. "I have always felt that my place in life was in helping people become healthy and stay healthy."

Established in 1981, Martin's Point Health Care employs 290 healthcare professionals who serve 44,000 patients at clinics in Portland, Windham, Brunswick and Newington, N.H. Headquartered in Portland at 331 Veranda Street, Martin's Point accepts all major health plans and insurance, including but not limited to HealthSource, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Harvard Community Health Plan, Maine Partners, Champus, Tricare, Aetna, Cigna and NYLCare Plans.
