Martin’s Point Health Care Urges Women to Get Mammograms, Perform Self-Exams

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Martin’s Point Health Care is urging women over 40 to get a mammogram each year and reminding all women to perform monthly self-exams.

“Mammograms usually take less than 15 minutes and are an easy, non-invasive way to detect early breast cancer,” said Holly Glidden, Radiology Manager, RTR(M) at Martin’s Point Health Care. “And monthly self exams also are a very important part of staying healthy.”

According to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, about 1,000 women across Maine are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. And unfortunately, approximately 200 women in Maine die each year from breast cancer.

“A recent study conducted in Massachusetts found that only a fraction of women who need mammograms actually get them every year as recommended,” said Glidden. “That’s unfortunate, given mammograms are so readily available, so we are reminding women it’s in their best interest to get a mammogram each year if they are over the age of 40, earlier if they have a history of breast cancer in their family. ”

In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Martin’s Point Health Care will be promoting patient and community awareness of the importance of self breast exams and screening mammograms through newspaper advertising, breast health informational displays in their Portland and Portsmouth clinics, as well as by sponsoring public service announcements on Lifetime Television in the Southern Maine viewing area.

In addition, here is a checklist to help reduce cancer risk, detect problems and, if necessary, get women on the road to treatment:

  • Perform monthly self-exams
  • Have annual physicals
  • Get a mammogram
  • Find a buddy to remind each other about self-exams
  • Eat smart
  • Stay active
  • Don’t smoke

Established in 1981, Martin’s Point is a not-for-profit health care provider with facilities in Portland, Brunswick and Windham, Maine, and in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and serves patients in the areas of family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, radiology, cardiology, and mammography, as well as other fields.

The Martin’s Point Health Education Center has a variety of related resource materials that includes publications and videos. The center offers information and classes that focus on a host of other topics, ranging from weight loss and smoking cessation to diabetes and disease management.
