Medical and Other Volunteers Needed for Upcoming TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race

Race organizers reaching out to physicians, nurses and EMTs to volunteer in medical tent

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine – Physicians, nurses, EMTs and non-medical volunteers are needed to help staff the medical tent at the upcoming TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth.

Race organizers want to make sure there will be enough medical personnel to adequately treat runners suffering from any race-related injuries or heat conditions on race day. The TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon also provides professional liability coverage to medical personnel who volunteer.

The race will be held on Saturday, August 6. Volunteers can choose to help out before, during or after the race.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Maya Cohen, the race’s volunteer coordinator, at (207) 838-8816 or mmcohen@maine.rr.com. To register online, go to www.beach2beacon.org and click ‘Volunteer Opportunities.’

Those without Internet access are asked to call (207) 838-8816 to request a volunteer application, or pick up a form at a TD Banknorth branch statewide. Also, minors (under age 18) cannot register online and need to obtain a volunteer form by contacting Cohen.

Professional medical personnel are needed to provide an array of treatment, but non-medical volunteers also are needed for tent set up, transporting ice and water, record keeping and other important tasks, Cohen said.

Besides the medical tent, where 32 volunteers are still needed, other areas of need include parking, the 1K kid’s race, chip recovery and the runner’s food tent. Volunteers receive a commemorative t-shirt for their efforts and are invited to a special picnic following the race.

The TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K, founded by Joan Benoit Samuelson and TD Banknorth, has become one of the marquee events on the international road race circuit, attracting elite athletes worldwide to Maine. The event, which attracts about 10,000 spectators who line the course, requires as many as 850 volunteers each year.

Runners from around the world, New England and Maine – 5,000 in all – will compete in the race that begins at Crescent Beach along Route 77 and ends 6.2 miles later in Fort Williams at Portland Head, the most photographed lighthouse in America.
