New Locally-owned Craft Brewery – Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co. – Planned for Yarmouth’s Historic Main Street

Proposed by two local entrepreneurs, Brickyard Hollow will be a family-friendly, small-batch brewery and restaurant located at 236 Main St.

YARMOUTH, Maine (May 30, 2017) – Plans are underway for a new family-friendly, small-batch brewery and restaurant – Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co. - in an historically significant location in the heart of Yarmouth Main Street village.

Brad Moll and Frank Grondin, both community-minded entrepreneurs, are in the process of getting the go ahead from the Yarmouth Planning Board with a goal to open the craft brewery to the public in late fall after renovating the soon-to-be-vacated Anthony’s Dry Cleaners at 236 Main St.

The proposed brewery will be located in the center of town in an area historically known as Brickyard Hollow. The Planning Board began its site plan review at its May 24 meeting. The owners anticipate receiving all approvals this summer.

Brickyard Hollow Brewing Co. will be Yarmouth’s first craft brewery, featuring a five-barrel system with up to three signature brews and a revolving line of eclectic and interesting craft recipes, all served on tap. An experienced and skilled full-time brewmaster will be starting soon, Grondin said.

The owners intend to create a beer-first atmosphere at Brickyard Hollow, focused on top-quality brews for discerning palates. The 2,100-square-foot space, which will seat 60 and include a 30-seat seasonal patio area, also will house a restaurant serving a mix of traditional pub fare with healthy choices, comfort food and tasty dishes that pair well with beer. Cocktails also will be available from a full bar.

The existing building will receive a complete remodel, including adding more brick and more windows to the space to create a classic local pub look with brewery production equipment in full view. The interior design will include accents and elements that give a nod to the historic aspects of Brickyard Hollow. The architect is Grant Hays Associates of Falmouth. Sebago Technics, Inc. is handling the site engineering.

Moll, 44, said that he and Grondin, 45, both married with children in Yarmouth schools, have for a few years discussed opening a craft brewery in Yarmouth.  Grondin is also part owner of Handy’s Market and Café on Main St. in Yarmouth.

“We really wanted to bring a unique, hyperlocal craft beer concept to Yarmouth, a gathering place for friends and families,” Moll said.  “Our vision for Brickyard Hollow is to become a gathering place for community events. Yarmouth is a collaborative, supportive group of residents who have a history of coming together to make positive things happen and Brickyard Hollow will support those efforts.”

In the 1800s, Brickyard Hollow was a muddy, flood-prone valley located in the center of Yarmouth and was considered the line that divided the coastal shipbuilding community in the Lower Falls from the inland farming community of the Upper Village.

Near the turn of the 20th century, in a move to unite the two villages and strengthen community bonds, the hollow was filled in and leveled out with a two-foot layer of black ash from a nearby paper mill. The revitalized area was used for parades and community events and a host of public buildings, including the town library, were built there along with businesses and homes.

“The story of this location really resonates with what we want to do with our craft brewery,” Grondin said. “We want this to be a place where you can put down your cell phone and connect with your neighbors and your family.”

In addition to bringing on the head brewer, the owners also are in the process of hiring a master chef and a general manager.

The Yarmouth Planning Board is continuing its review of the Brickyard Hollow proposal in June.
