Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race

Two athletes who will grace the world stage at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, in September are set to compete along with a host of former Olympians and some of the world's top road racers in the Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race on August 5 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

(Look below for complete list of elite runners, including bib numbers for race.)

The Peoples Beach to Beacon's Olympians include Libbie Hickman, who will represent the United States in the 10,000-meter run, and Marian Sutton of Great Britain, who will compete in the marathon in Sydney. (Lidia Simon of Romania, a favorite in the Olympic women's marathon, is a late scratch for the Peoples Beach to Beacon due to an ankle injury suffered while training Wednesday.)

A number of the world's top road racers also are slated to compete in the 2000 Peoples Beach to Beacon on the men's side, which is shaping up to be an exciting race. The list of top- flight contenders includes Khalid Khannouchi, last year's champion who is running his first race on American soil as a U.S. citizen; Joseph Kimani of Kenya, last year's runnerup who owns the world's best 10K mark; and Reuben Cheriuyot of Kenya, currently the top ranked road racer in the world. Catherine Ndereba of Kenya, the reigning Boston Marathon champion who won the first two Peoples Beach to Beacon races, is favored in the women's race along with Hickman.

The 2000 field for the Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race also includes past Olympians such as Yuko Arimori of Japan, who won a medal in the marathon in 1992 and 1996 and is considered a superstar in her native country; Anne Marie Lauck of the U.S., who finished 10th in the 1996 marathon; Mark Coogan, who represented the U.S. in 1996; and German Silva of Mexico, a two-time New York Marathon champion who placed in the top six at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.
