Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race Attracts Tallship Californian for Race on Saturday

Weekend three-hour sails offered to public to support Turning Point Farm, this year's race beneficiary

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine á The Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race on Saturday will showcase some of the world's top distance runners as well as the majestic tallship Californian, which will be seen off Fort Williams Park during the race.

Members of the public who were awed by OpSail Maine 2000 last weekend in Portland will get another chance to tour the Californian this weekend á and even have the opportunity to participate in a three-hour, hands-on sail.

The 145-foot square topsail schooner is returning this weekend as a show of support for the third running of the Peoples Beach to Beacon, which has quickly found a place among the elite road races in the world.

The Californian will be on hand Saturday morning to greet the 4,000 runners as they cross the finish line near the Portland Head Light in Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. In keeping with Peoples' Shining the Light for Maine Youth program, the Californian will host five youth on board during the sail to Portland Head Light for the race.

The public will have the opportunity to tour the ship on Friday, Aug. 4, and Saturday, Aug. 5, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. while she is docked at the Maine State Pier. The public also may sail aboard the ship on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Cost of the three- hour, hands-on sail is $95, with $25 of each ticket going to support Turning Point Farm, a long-term home for abused or neglected children in state care. Turning Point Farm has been designated this year's race beneficiary.

For day sail information and reservations, please call (800) 432-2201.

The Californian is a replica of the C.W. Lawrence, a U.S. Revenue Marine Service cutter commissioned in 1848 and one of the fastest and grandest ships in the revenue service fleet. Launched in 1984, the Californian was built as a sail-training vessel by and for the Nautical Heritage Society of San Diego. Although the Californian is a revenue cutter, many will recognze her as the slave ship ÎAmistad' in Steven Speilberg's movie of the same name. Saturday's Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race will include 4,000 runners, including three 2000 Olympians and a host of other elite runners from around the world, and 6,000 spectators who will line the picturesque course through Cape Elizabeth.

Now in its third year, the popular race requires more than 500 volunteers and an extraordinary effort on the part of the Town of Cape Elizabeth. Peoples Heritage Bank, the state's largest bank, sponsors and coordinates the race founded by Joan Benoit Samuelson of Maine, a running legend who won the first Olympic women's marathon. She serves as a spokesperson for the bank's Peoples Promise Program for youth in Maine.

This year the race's executive committee chose to support Turning Point Farm, a farm and long-term home for six children ages six to 11 which opened in July. As the race beneficiary, Turning Point Farm will receive $30,000. Set on an idyllic 12-acre, 16-room farmhouse off Route 100 in New Gloucester, Turning Point Farm is for young boys and girls who have been abused or neglected and are in the care of the Maine Department of Human Services. The program is designed to allow for healing and growth while nurturing attachments with others. As part of the animal-assisted therapy program, the children spend their days feeding and grooming cows, goats and sheep, collecting eggs, exercising animals and tending a garden as well as attending school and counseling sessions. Director and founder Nancy Rochat, a licensed clinical social worker and resident of Portland, worked for Sweetser Children's Services before embarking on her dream to provide a farm for children in need.
