Peoples Heritage Bank Honored by March of Dimes

Peoples lauded for employee participation in WalkAmerica and its part in raising almost $500,000 since 1996 to fight birth defects

The March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation has honored Peoples Heritage Bank for its involvement and high level of employee participation in the annual WalkAmerica, which has raised almost $500,000 to fight birth defects in the last five years with the bank as a statewide sponsor.

Michael W. McNamara, president and CEO of Peoples Heritage Bank, a Maine-based bank with more than 60 branches throughout the state, was cited for his leadership that has resulted in hundreds of bank employees participating in WalkAmerica each year. Pat Provost, a specialized administrative assistant at Peoples who has served as statewide coordinator of the bank's effort the past two years, also was honored by March of Dimes.

"Mike McNamara and Pat Provost represent the best in this community," said Carol Wilbur, regional development director in the national office of March of Dimes in White Plains, N.Y. "They reflect the Maine tradition of people helping people and Peoples helping people."

Wilbur made the presentation recently during a ceremony at the Falmouth headquarters of the Maine State Chapter of the March of Dimes. McNamara is a resident of Cape Elizabeth and Provost resides in Durham.

Wilbur said Maine is fortunate to have one of the best records nationally for healthy babies. But she cautioned that the rates of prematurity are and have been increasing dramatically in the past 15 years. The March of Dimes is committed to finding the cause of this unhealthy trend, she said.

The annual WalkAmerica event is scheduled for April 29 in most Maine communities. FMI, call the March of Dimes at 878-1199 or 1-800-668-5678.

Peoples Heritage Bank and its employees are known for their charitable efforts throughout the state. Employees in the bank's Retail Division recently raised $2,600 for the Maine Cancer Program as part of an annual event. The bank's nationally recognized "Peoples Promise" program also benefits Maine youths with scholarships, sponsorship programs, and charitable gifts. Peoples Heritage Bank also co-founded the annual Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth. Each year, the bank awards $30,000 in race proceeds to a youth organization in Maine.

Peoples Heritage Bank is a Maine-based bank with more than 60 branches throughout the state, five of which operate as Oxford Bank & Trust, a division of the bank. The bank and its parent company, Banknorth Group, Inc., employ more than 2,200 in the state. For more information, log on to the bank's web site at http://www.peoplesheritage.com.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community service, education and advocacy to save babies.
