Portland Lawyer Invited on Trade Mission to Republic of Estonia

Scott Schul Wants to Foster Increased Trade and Economic Relationships With the Thriving Eastern European Country

PORTLAND, Maine (March 21, 2000) -- Scott E. Schul, an attorney with Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, has been invited by government officials in Estonia to participate in a series of meetings designed to foster increased trade and economic relationships between New England and the thriving Eastern European country.

Schul departs to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, on Wednesday, March 22, for meetings with the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Estonian Investment Agency and the American Chamber of Commerce Estonia. During his nine-day trip, he also is scheduled to meet with Ambassador Melissa Wells, the U.S. Ambassador to Estonia.

The trip is the result of Schul's grassroots effort to open economic doors in Estonia to the business community in Maine and throughout New England.

"I see a number of cultural and economic parallels between Estonia and Maine," said Schul, a shareholder with Bernstein, Shur, one of northern New England's largest law firms. "It's a natural partnership that will begin to bloom once both parties become aware of the economic potential."

Estonia, located on the Baltic Sea along the northern coast of Europe, has experienced rapid economic growth since achieving its independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. With a stable economy, democratically elected government, flat tax rate and balanced budget, Estonia is attractive to foreign investors in search of business opportunities. With a deep water port and an efficient transportation system, the country also provides a safe and effective distribution gateway into Russia, Schul said.

Schul urged anyone to log on to www.estemb.org, Estonia's official web site in Washington D.C., for more information about the country and its economic opportunities.

Estonia is similar in size to Massachusetts and in population to Maine. Its long, rugged coastline and an economy traditionally dependent on the sea also draw similarities to Maine. Both regions, as well, are evolving into more tech-based economies. Estonia's rate of Internet connections per capita is one of the highest in Europe, and exceeds both France and Germany, Schul said.

Schul hopes his talks will begin a dialogue that leads to increased commerce between the two regions. "Any business that wanted to expand into Eastern Europe would be wise to start first in Estonia," he said. "I just want to see if I can open some doors on behalf of Maine businesses over there to begin to foster what I anticipate could be a strong relationship."

Schul is a member of Bernstein, Shur's growing International Law and Trade Practice Group. Attorneys in the group advise Maine companies on doing business overseas, and also are active in assisting foreign nationals in the purchase and development of businesses in the U.S. The firm recently translated its award-winning web site, www.mainelaw.com, into six languages.

Schul regularly assists international companies with intellectual property matters, including federal trademark registrations and the resolution of trademark disputes. He also practices in the areas of general taxation, executive compensation, employee benefits and general business law.

Schul, a Portland resident, earned an L.L.M. in taxation from Boston University in 1997 and is a 1991 graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law in Morgantown, W. Va., and a 1988 graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania in Clarion, Pa. Originally from Kane, Pa., Schul is the son of Gary and Lynda Schul of Kane.

BSSN is the only Maine law firm that is a member of Lex Mundi, an international association of 151 law firms that exchange resources, legal counsel, research, office space and libraries. Through its Lex Mundi affiliation, the firm regularly acts as local counsel for the clients of foreign law firms.

Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson is one of northern New England's largest law firms with more than 60 attorneys in offices in Portland and Augusta. The firm provides legal services in all major subject areas, including corporate and commercial law, litigation and trials, municipal and governmental affairs, and tax and estate planning. In addition to international law, BSSN also has an active practice in health law, environmental law, technology and e-commerce, employment law, legislative law, intellectual property, electric utilities and other regulated industries.
