Public Urged to Get Involved and Help Prevent Child Abuse

Cumberland County Child Abuse and Neglect Council sponsoring events as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April

Youth Alternatives' Cumberland County Child Abuse and Neglect Council is sponsoring a variety of events and activities this month as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, joining organizations throughout Maine and the nation to encourage communities to participate in efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect.

A division of Youth Alternatives, the Council provides training, education, and parenting activities throughout Cumberland County to assist communities in helping support children and families. Advocates are urging the public to join efforts to keep children and families safe.

In 2003, 5,107 reports of child abuse in Maine were assigned for an assessment, and 2,589 of those were substantiated and opened for service. Children and their families - from all races, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds – suffer each day as a result of abuse or neglect.

During April's annual observance of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Council will be sponsoring events to highlight the importance of preventing child abuse and to explore the role each of us can play to support families and reach out to children who may need a positive adult role model in their lives.

"We need to raise the public's awareness to the promise of prevention. We know how to prevent child abuse – now let's do it!" said Lucky Hollander, the vice president of advocacy and prevention at Youth Alternatives. "We need to empower and encourage people to become involved and support families and children so that we can assure that children grow up in healthy, positive environments – both at home and in the community."

Youth Alternatives is encouraging community members to wear blue ribbons throughout April in support of prevention activities. The ribbons are available by calling 874-1175.

In addition, the Cumberland County Child Abuse and Neglect Council will sponsor a FREE Family Fun Day on Sunday, April 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Windham Middle School Gym on Windham Center Road. At the free event, families will enjoy an afternoon of laughs, snacks, art projects and raffles along with welcoming ‘Abracadabra Productions’ featuring "The Phil Smith Experience." Phil Smith has been delighting children for more than 20 years with comedy, juggling, unique storytelling, sleight-of-hand, balloon animals, lots of audience participation, and the magical production of a rabbit!

The Cumberland Council Child Abuse and Neglect Council will also recognize six individuals on April 30, 2004 with a Prevention Awards Luncheon at the Portland Regency from Noon to 1:30 p.m. For more information about the Awards Luncheon, please contact the Council at 874-1175 ext. 173.

There are many things that individuals can do – during April and throughout the year – to keep the children in their lives and communities safe and healthy. To learn more, visit the Youth Alternatives website at www.youthalternatives.org or email prevention@youthalternatives.org.

Founded in 1976, the Council became a part of Youth Alternatives in 1997. Youth Alternatives provides a full range of services, from child advocacy, prevention and early intervention to intensive intervention and safe-haven homes for youth. Through its programs, Youth Alternatives serves more than 7,000 children, youth and family members throughout Maine each year. Youth Alternatives relies on federal, state and local grants, foundations, United Way organizations, corporate support and individual donations.
