TD Banknorth Announces Winners of "Housing for Everyone" Grant Competition

More than $675,000 in grants in eight states, including Maine, to support affordable housing for low- to moderate-income families

Portland, Maine – The TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation and TD Banknorth Inc. have announced the Maine winners of their 2006 “Housing for Everyone” grant competition. In Maine, TD Banknorth awarded Avesta Housing Development Corporation in Portland; Washington Hancock Community Agency in Ellsworth; and PROP (People’s Regional Opportunity Program) in Portland, a total of $50,000 in funding, ranging from $15,000 - $20,000, to provide affordable housing to very low- to moderate-income individuals and families.

“We believe that the recipient organizations exemplify the mission of TD Banknorth’s ‘Housing for Everyone’ grant competition—to increase the availability of and access to affordable housing in our communities,” said David Ott, President of TD Banknorth Maine. “TD Banknorth is committed to the development and retention of safe affordable housing in Maine, and we look forward to working with these organizations to address this issue on a local level.”

Located in Portland, Avesta’s mission is to promote and provide housing opportunities for Southern Maine people in need. Avesta intends to utilize its grant from TD Banknorth to support Florence House, a Center for Homeless Women, which will provide permanent, supported housing without barriers for up to 50 chronically homeless women in Portland.

Located in Ellsworth, Washington Hancock Community Agency’s mission is to promote self-sufficiency by helping income-eligible persons obtain essential services. WHCA intends to utilize its grant from TD Banknorth to support the Hancock County Self Help Homebuilding Program, in which an association of families help each other build separate homes, with each family owning their own home when all homes are completed.

Located in Portland, PROP’s mission is to identify and address the societal, economic, educational and health needs that exist in Maine. PROP intends to utilize its grant from TD Banknorth to fund the Bayside East project, which will provide 20 new affordable senior housing units and supportive services in the East Bayside neighborhood of Portland.

The TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation and TD Banknorth solicited proposals that demonstrated innovation, creativity and feasibility in solving local affordable housing needs. To be eligible to win, proposals had to target very-low, low- and moderate-income individuals and families, and demonstrate a measurable increase in the availability of affordable housing or increase the opportunity for households to obtain affordable housing. Proposed projects were required to be new or start-up programs, and applicant organizations needed to have tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status.

TD Banknorth’s competition was also open to organizations in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
