Ten Maine high school 2007graduates were awarded $2,500 each by TD Banknorth as part of the bank’s nationally recognized “TD Banknorth Promise” program created to help Maine youth.

Senior students receiving the $2,500 scholarships were: Hannah Breton of Greenville, Greenville High School; Caleb Byron of Benton, SDG Academy; Amber Duguay of Mexico, Mountain Valley High School; Danielle Fontaine of Bath, Morse High School; Justin Giroux of Fairfield, Lawrence High School; Leanne Hemingway of Ludlow, Hodgdon High School; Haili Muse of Norridgewock, Skowhegan High School; Christina Simonds of Springvale, Sanford High School; Rebekah Wakefield of Burlington, Mattanawcook High School, and Brooke Winchester of Calais, Calais High School.

The $25,000 annual scholarship program is aimed at rewarding Maine students for academic excellence and helping offset their higher education costs. Scholarship recipients also are offered an optional three-month paid internship position with TD Banknorth after their first year of post-secondary education. The scholarships are being administered by the MES Foundation.

The scholarship program is part of the TD Banknorth Promise: Shining the Light for Maine Youth program. The program, which has been recognized nationally by the America’s Promise Program as a significant “promise-maker,” helps provide Maine’s young people with access to the fundamental resources needed to lead healthy, happy lives.

As part of the TD Banknorth Promise: Shining the Light for Maine Youth program, TD Banknorth also partners with Junior Achievement in a school outreach program whereby bank employees volunteer in classrooms throughout the year to teach middle-school students about economic concepts. The company also supports the TD Banknorth Strike Out Cancer in Kids program, benefiting the Maine Children’s Cancer program; and the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon Race, an annual 10K road race held in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The race draws internationally known competitors and benefits a different children’s charity each year.
