TD Banknorth Commits $200,000 to Camp Sunshine to Help Expand Programs for Families of Sick Children
Camp Sunshine in Casco one of the only camps in U.S. that serves entire family of seriously ill children
Casco, Maine Camp Sunshine announced today that TD Banknorth has committed $200,000 to the non-profit organization to help expand its program assisting families of seriously ill children on a year-round basis.
The grant, provided by TD Banknorths charitable giving arm, the TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation, will be used to sponsor families from the communities that the bank serves throughout Maine and the Northeast.
Camp Sunshine, located in Maines Sebago Lake region, supports children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The camp offers one of the only programs in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family. While attending the various week-long camps, families are able to rebuild relationships together and meet other families facing similar challenges.
This generous gift from TD Banknorth will allow us to serve more families and build our year-round program, said Matt Hoidal, Camp Sunshines Executive Director. We receive anywhere from 50 to 70 applications for each peak summer session, and we can only accept 40 families. We dont want to have to tell families to check back with us next summer. A life-threatening illness doesnt shut down at the end of the summer, so neither should we.
David Ott, president of TD Banknorth Maine, said the bank is a strong supporter of Camp Sunshines mission and is pleased to be a part of its expansion to touch the lives of even more families.
Camp Sunshine is a top-notch organization that plays a critical role in helping families during trying times, Ott said. The support and hope provided by Camp Sunshine is invaluable to these families. We welcome the opportunity to lend a hand.
Camp Sunshines board of directors recently embarked upon a $14.5 million endowment campaign. Combined with other commitments received to date, the donation from TD Banknorth brings the total raised by Camp Sunshine to $4.5 million.
This investment from TD Banknorth is a wonderful example of their commitment to enhancing the lives of children and families in the communities in which they do business, said Kevin Hancock, Chairman, President & CEO of Hancock Lumber, and Chairman of Camp Sunshines Maine Endowment Committee. On behalf of Camp Sunshine, we are grateful for the banks generosity and continued support.
Founded in 1984, Camp Sunshine was the first and remains one of the only camps in the nation whose sole focus is on serving the entire family, and not just the sick child. The program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Bereavement groups also are offered for families who have lost a child to an illness. Camp Sunshine has attracted families from 44 states and 15 countries over the years, and provided a camp experience for more than 20,500 family members.
For more information about Camp Sunshines programs and to learn more about volunteering or making a donation, visit the camps website at www.campsunshine.org, or call (207) 655-3800. TD Banknorth Maine operates 61 branches and 90 ATMs in the state. A division of TD Banknorth, N.A., TD Banknorth Maine is the states largest bank and provides more than 229,000 Maine households with a full line of retail banking products and services including commercial and consumer products, trust & investment services, commercial and personal insurance and residential mortgages.
