TD Banknorth Seeks Local Proposals for 2007 Housing for Everyone Grant Competition

Second year of program targets $1 million in grants to support transitional housing and homeless shelter space in eight states, including Maine

PORTLAND, Maine — The TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation and TD Banknorth Inc. have announced a call for proposals for their 2007 Housing for Everyone grant competition, which supports affordable housing initiatives in the communities where TD Banknorth does business, including Maine.

In Maine, TD Banknorth will award a total of $50,000 in grants, comprising a number of individual grants ranging from $15,000 to $20,000. Overall, TD Banknorth will commit more than $1 million in grant awards for the 2007 Housing for Everyone program.

This is the second year TD Banknorth has held the Housing for Everyone grant competition. The focus for 2007 grant awards is to support programs that create or preserve transitional housing or homeless shelter space. Grant competition proposals must demonstrate a measurable increase in the availability or rehabilitation of transitional housing or homeless shelter space.

TD Banknorth takes its commitment to our communities to heart so we are pleased that this year’s Housing for Everyone grant competition will support local programs that effectively increase the availability of transitional housing and shelter space for individuals and families in Maine,” said Larry Wold, President, TD Banknorth, Maine.

In 2006, TD Banknorth made 51 Housing for Everyone awards totaling $762,000, with $50,000 supporting programs in Maine. Last year’s local grant recipients included Avesta Housing Development Corp, Portland; Washington Hancock Community Agency, Ellsworth; People’s Regional Opportunity Program (PROP), Portland.

Qualified community-based organizations are encouraged to submit proposals by August 15, 2007. Applicant organizations must have tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status. Proposed projects should be new construction or rehabilitation of transitional housing or homeless shelter space. Proposals may also include construction of new affordable housing units, rental or homeownership, with a minimum of 10 percent of the total housing units reserved for the homeless.

Each of the eight participating states—Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont—will have its own panel of local judges who will evaluate and rate qualified applicants. Submissions will be accepted from June 15 through the deadline of August 15, 2007. Notification of awards will be made in September 2007.
