TD Banknorth to Award $25,000 in Scholarships to 10 Maine High School Seniors

Part of the bank's 'TD Banknorth Promise' program

High school seniors headed to college this fall may now apply online for scholarships awarded each year by TD Banknorth as part of the bank’s nationally recognized “TD Banknorth Promise” program created to help Maine youth.

Scholarships of $2,500 will be awarded to 10 Maine high school seniors from throughout the state who will enroll in a post-secondary institution. Now in its ninth year, the scholarship program is designed to reward Maine students from low- to moderate-income households for academic excellence and to help offset their higher education costs. Recipients are also offered an optional three-month paid internship position with TD Banknorth after their first year of post-secondary education.

For more information or to obtain an application, go to www.mesfoundation.com, or call the MES Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that is administering the scholarship program for TD Banknorth, at 1-800-922-6352.

“The cost of higher education continues to rise, and we remain committed to expanding the opportunities available to Maine youth by providing financial assistance to help them reach their potential,” said David Ott, President of TD Banknorth in Maine. “With the ongoing success of this scholarship program, we are continuing to make a difference in the lives of young people in our state who aspire to attain a college degree.”

Awards are based on financial need, academic achievement, involvement in school activities, community volunteer activity, work experience, and a required essay. The application deadline is April 15. Scholarship recipients will be announced in June.

When the program was launched in January of 1999, TD Banknorth committed $250,000 in scholarships over a 10-year period as part of the TD Banknorth Promise: Shining the Light for Maine Youth program. The program, which has been recognized nationally by the America’s Promise Program as a significant “promise-maker,” helps provide Maine’s young people with access to the fundamental resources needed to lead healthy, happy lives.

TD Banknorth also partners with Junior Achievement in a school outreach program whereby bank employees volunteer in classrooms throughout the year to teach sixth graders about economic concepts. The company also supports the TD Banknorth Strike Out Cancer in Kids program, benefiting the Maine Children’s Cancer program; and the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon Race, an annual 10K road race held in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The race draws internationally known competitors and benefits a different children’s charity each year.

In Maine, TD Banknorth operates more than 55 branches and more than 90 ATMs. It is the state’s largest bank and provides more than 207,000 Maine households with a full line of retail banking products and services including commercial and consumer products, trust and investment services, commercial and personal insurance and residential mortgages. The branches of TD Banknorth have served their customers and communities in Maine for more than 100 years and are recognized for a commitment to personalized service, long-term customer relationships, local decision-making, and community involvement.
