TD Beach to Beacon Sports Medicine Symposium in Portland Aug. 2 Geared for Medical Personnel as well as Runners and Athletes

Free event at Dana Center Auditorium at Maine Medical Center

PORTLAND, Maine (July 24, 2012) – The highly-skilled medical team for the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race is conducting a Sports Medicine Symposium on Thursday, Aug. 2, aimed at medical personnel as well as runners and anyone interested in fitness.

The free symposium, which will take place at the Dana Center Auditorium at Maine Medical Center from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 2, features speakers covering a range of topics, including:
  • Erin Dawson-Chalat, MD - Train Like a Mother: The female runner and what to expect when training for two
  • John Devlin, MD - The Diabetic Athlete
  • Joan Benoit Samuelson - Running for Longevity in Sport
  • Chris Troyanos, ATC, Michael Baumann, MD, and Mylan Cohen, MD - The TD Beach to Beacon Medical Tent - What to Expect
“We’re offering topics that we believe will be of wide interest not only to those in a medical profession but also runners and everyday athletes,” said Chris Troyanos, ATC, Medical Coordinator for both the TD Beach to Beacon 10K and the B.A.A. Boston Marathon.

The event will take place two days before the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, set for Sat., Aug. 6, at 8 a.m. in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The road race is supported by many physicians, nurses and EMTs from across the region who donate their time and expertise in the medical tent at the finish and along the course.

Joan Benoit Samuelson, the lone speaker without a medical background, is a Maine native and founder of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K who won the first women’s Olympic Marathon gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Since her gold medal performance, Samuelson, now 55, continues to inspire women runners around the world as well as compete at a high level, setting age-group records and showing that age is not a barrier.

The panel of speakers also includes Dr. Erin Dawson-Chalat, Obstetrics & Gynecology at Maine Medical Center; Dr. John T. Devlin, Internal Medicine, Diabetes Specialist and Endocrinology at Maine Medical Center; Dr. Michael Baumann, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Maine Medical Center; and Dr. Mylan Cohen of Maine Medical Partners MaineHealth Cardiology, who serves as Director of Noninvasive Cardiology at Maine Medical Center.

There also will be a question and answer session to conclude the event. Participants are asked to RSVP with Chris Troyanos at troyanos@comcast.net. The event is free of charge and will include light snacks compliments of Maine Medical Center.

This year marks the special 15th running of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, which filled in 10 minutes and is considered one of the gems on the U.S. road race circuit. The race begins near the Crescent Beach State Park entrance on Route 77 and ends 6.2 miles later in Fort Williams Park at the Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in America.

A race field of 6,000 is expected, including one of the strongest elite fields in race history as well as top runners in Maine and across New England. The 2011 race included runners from 12 countries and 43 U.S. states.
