Thomas Hillman Opens Virtual Design Firm

Thomas Hillman, an award-winning Maine designer who has helped companies such as LL Bean and IDEXX Laboratories with branding and other creative services, has launched a new virtual design firm.

Hillman, who most recently served as Managing Director at Axon Design & Marketing, launched his new firm this week.

“The new model of Thomas Hillman Design, or THD, is that of a virtual agency,” said Hillman. “I will serve clients as the creative director and client relations manager, but I will be working with a talented network of independent advertising, design, and marketing communications professionals. The model allows us flexibility in how we work with clients, forming dedicated teams to fit their needs.”

Hillman’s expertise and firm services will include annual reports, brand identity, package design, print advertising, print collateral and web design. Working with Hillman will be top designers, marketing strategists, copywriters and other professionals as needed.

“Successful brand design evokes a positive emotion,” added Hillman. “It’s relevant. It makes a connection with the right audience, your customers. Great brand design is a business asset, garnering customer loyalty.”

Hillman, of South Portland, has earned a number of awards since starting his first firm in 1985 in the Old Port, including a Mead 60 award for an annual report for the American Cancer Society, Maine Public Relations Council Best of Show for Maine Medical Center’s annual report, more than 30 Broderson awards and numerous national awards. In addition, he has had his work published in more than two dozen design publications.

Hillman also has worked with Hannaford Bros. Co, InterMed, MaineHealth, Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Northeast Bank and the Samoset Resort.

A graduate of the Art Institute in Pittsburgh, Hillman is a member of the Ad Club of Maine and AIGA of Maine. For the past six years he has served on the Steering Committee for the United Way of Greater Portland’s annual Day of Caring.

He also has donated designs to numerous local non profit organizations, including Children’s Theatre of Maine, City of Portland, Friends of Maine Medical Center, Mad Horse Theatre Company, Portland West Housing Authority, Portland Stage Company, Portland Symphony Orchestra, United Way of Greater Portland and the Zero Gravity Diving Center.
