Volunteers Needed for this Year’s TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K

Volunteers Can Register Online at www.beach2beacon.org

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine – Volunteers are needed for this year’s TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K, formerly called the Peoples Beach to Beacon, on Saturday, Aug. 6. Volunteers can register online at www.beach2beacon.org.

Returning volunteers who wish to work in the same area are encouraged to register as soon as possible, according to Maya Cohen, volunteer coordinator for the race. Teams of 10 or more volunteers from area businesses or organizations are also encouraged to call Cohen directly at (207) 838-8816 about volunteering.

About 800 volunteers are needed in all to ensure the smooth operation of Maine’s premiere sporting event. The race attracts 5,000 runners, including some of the world’s finest, and as many as 10,000 spectators who line the course to cheer the runners.

“This year we are encouraging past volunteers who want their same assignment to sign up soon,” said Cohen. “And we’d love to have teams from area organizations or businesses. Volunteers help make this race the event it is and we are grateful for every one of them. It’s also fun.”

Volunteers are utilized in all aspects of the event, including registration, course set up and break down, water stations, baggage assistance, recycling and parking. Volunteers receive a commemorative T-shirt and are treated to a post-race celebration/picnic at Fort Williams Park following the awards ceremony.

Those without Internet access are asked to call (207) 838-8816 to request a volunteer application, or pick up a form at a TD Banknorth branch statewide. Also, minors (under age 18) cannot register online and need to obtain a volunteer form by contacting Cohen at (207) 838-8816 or mmcohen@maine.rr.com.

The Beach to Beacon, now in its eighth year, has become one of the marquee events in the international road race circuit, attracting elite athletes from throughout the world to Maine.

TD Banknorth sponsors the race founded by Joan Benoit Samuelson, the well-known Olympic gold medallist. The race begins at Crescent Beach along Route 77 and ends 6.2 miles later in Fort Williams at the Portland Head lighthouse, the most photographed lighthouse in America.

This year’s race beneficiary is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Portland and Auburn/Lewiston. The bank, through the TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation, will provide a cash donation of $30,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs, which provides programs, activities and a nurturing environment to thousands of children in Maine.
