Day One Selected as Beneficiary for 2011 TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth, Maine

TD Charitable Foundation to provide $30,000 donation to Day One, which also will benefit from fundraising opportunities and publicity

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (February 7, 2011) – TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, announced today that Day One, a non-profit agency providing substance abuse prevention, intervention, treatment and aftercare programs for Maine youth, has been selected as this year’s beneficiary of the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Day One (www.day-one.org) targets substance abuse at all stages with a wide-range of programs designed to meet the needs in communities across Maine. Headquartered in South Portland, Maine, Day One has been providing alcohol and drug treatment services since 1973 and mental health services since 1980. The agency served more than 1,600 youth in 2010.

"Day One makes a powerful difference in the lives of Maine youth by working with them to dramatically reduce substance abuse and helping them live productive and healthy lives,” said Larry Wold, TD Bank Market President for Maine. "We are very pleased to support Day One as this year’s TD Bank Beach to Beacon race beneficiary and raise awareness of both youth substance abuse and Day One's programs to reduce it."

TD Bank (www.TDBank.com), through the TD Charitable Foundation, will provide a cash donation of $30,000 to Day One. The organization also will benefit from fundraising activities and publicity through its association with one of Maine’s premiere sporting events.

The 14th annual TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race (www.beach2beacon.org) is set for Saturday, August 6 along the picturesque shores of Maine’s rocky coastline in Cape Elizabeth.
South Portland-based Day One provides a range of substance abuse programs to Maine youth statewide. Day One counselors treat youth at its residential treatment center and transitional house as well as at both the Long Creek and Mountain View youth development centers in Maine. In addition, the organization’s outpatient services include substance abuse evaluation, individual, group and family therapy, intensive outpatient programs, case management for youth, school-based services, the Homeless Youth Project and parent support groups. Day One also provides extensive prevention programs, working with parents and students in communities throughout Maine.

“Maine suffers from one of the highest rates of adolescent substance abuse nationwide and Day One has led the fight against this for 38 years,” said David Faulkner, Executive Director of Day One. “We are proud of the success we’ve had, yet remain fully aware that in an increasingly complex world, our work is as vital as ever. We are grateful that TD Bank has chosen us as this year’s race beneficiary and look forward to the opportunity to highlight our programs and share our vision in helping kids.”

Day One, which is supported by United Way, collaborates with schools, partner organizations, communities and state government.

Day One’s James C. Harrod Residential Treatment Center admits young men ages 16-20 from all Maine counties. During the eight-month to one-year intensive substance abuse counseling program, clients are taught life skills and also attend an on-site accredited high school to earn GEDs or diplomas.

Graduates of the Residential Treatment Center and other Day One programs are eligible to live in Jo and Smitty’s Transitional House for Recovery in Portland, where clients receive support through Day One’s AfterCare Program while living independently in an apartment style setting. Many other clients also participate in the AfterCare Program, which provides continuing support in maintaining a recovering lifestyle.

In addition to treatment programs, Day One focuses on prevention by working with parents, students and communities to address risk factors for substance abuse and other issues. Communities consistently invite Day One to run parent nights to help parents address teen behavior.
South Portland-based Day One provides a range of substance abuse programs to Maine youth statewide. For example, Day One and Kennebunk High School are in their second year working together to implement a program called Project SUCCESS (Schools Using Coordinated Efforts to Strengthen Students). The program helps students cope with the stressors of everyday living, avoid drug use, and understand the complexities of substance use in families.

Another prevention program is Day One’s award-winning Natural Helpers of Maine program, a peer helping program for high school students throughout Maine. The program is grounded in the belief that students provide a natural support network to help reduce or prevent substance abuse, domestic abuse and the other stressors in schools.
