Levinsky's Completes Move to New Windham Location

New store stirs memories among customers of original Levinsky's

The recent move by Levinsky's to a new location in Windham has prompted a stirring of memories for long-time customers of the 86-year-old retailer.

"Customers are telling us it's reminiscent of the first store on Congress Street in Portland with its wood floors, size and a storefront with parking," said Eric Levinsky. "They remember how they did their school or holiday shopping here when they were younger, so it's been a very positive move. Sales are excellent, up 125 percent from this time last year. We're happy with how everything has turned out, and obviously our customers are happy."

Levinsky's, one of Maine's oldest and best known retailers of brand name jeans, dress clothes and cold weather apparel, moved October 16 from the Windham Mall to a larger, stand-alone building on Route 302 in Windham, the former Aubuchon Hardware.

The expansion to a two-floor facility comes at a time when other retailers also are expanding in Windham, said Levinsky, referring to the construction of a new Home Depot and a Lowe's, and recent openings of an Applebee's, Quizno's and Tim Horton's in the area.

The new store is located at 693 Roosevelt Trail (Route 302), about 100 yards from the shopping center containing Maine Bean and Bake House, Yankee Candle and Haven's Candies at the intersection of River Road and Route 302, across the street from Chute's Restaurant.

"This type of freestanding building with 302 frontage has already been a huge plus for us," said Levinsky. "We have always done better as a freestanding store, which is more convenient for customers since you can park right at the door."

The store, which features two floors as the original Levinsky's did, contains the largest selection of Levi's jeans in New England and an expanded Dockers department that carries pants, shirts, suits, sport coats, dress pants, belts, wallets and shoes, both casual and dressy.

"We also have expanded our traditional cold weather clothing lines, such as lined jeans, chamois shirts, wool socks, long johns and other items to keep our customers warm this winter," he said.

Eric Levinsky is the grandson of the store's founder, Jacob Levinsky, who opened his first store in 1919. Levinsky's has had a Windham location since 1988, and its downtown Portland store closed in 2003.

The new store's hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
