Maine State Chamber Recognizes Peoples Heritage Bank

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce recognized Peoples Heritage Bank as a recipient of a "1999 Maine Investor Award" at the organization's annual meeting October 6 in Augusta. The investor awards were given to companies "for their contributions to the growth of their companies and the state's economy."

The Chamber of Commerce recognized Peoples for being a leader in its lending to small businesses, its creation of new jobs in Lewiston and throughout the state, its community involvement, and introducing innovating banking practices such as Sunday hours and supermarket branches.

The bank's "Peoples Promise" program, which recognizes and assists young people throughout the state with a variety of programs, includes a $250,000 scholarship and intern program. Peoples also sponsors and organizes the annual Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth, which benefits a different children's charity each year.

"As Maine's largest bank, Peoples is committed to reinvesting in the communities it serves," the chamber award states. "Peoples Heritage Bank stands ready to meet both personal and commercial financial needs."

Based at One Portland Square in Portland, Peoples Heritage Bank is the state's largest bank, employing more than 2,200 in Maine with 75 branches throughout the state, five of which operate as Oxford Bank & Trust.
