Martin's Point Launches New Computer System for Managed Care

High-tech information system enhances claims, billing services for US Family Health Plan enrollees and providers

PORTLAND, Maine - Martin's Point Health Care has launched a new computer system to enhance managed-care services for enrollees of the Uniformed Services Family Health Plan, which is available to families of active-duty military personnel, retirees and their eligible dependents in Maine and New Hampshire.

The new high-tech system, installed in two stages this summer, is more robust and efficient than the previous computer system, providing additional automated features to handle services such as claims processing, billing, referrals and medical authorizations.

"It's a great platform that combines core managed-care functions with new technologies to help us better meet the needs of our US Family Health Plan members and network providers,"
said Doug Smith, chief operating officer at Martin's Point. "It supports a range of important electronic-data capabilities, including paperless claims and remittances to providers."

The US Family Health Plan, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, provides the TRICARE Prime managed-care program to about 100,000 people through networks of community-based civilian hospitals and physicians in seven areas across the nation. In Maine and southern New Hampshire, the plan is provided through Martin's Point, which serves more than 18,000 enrollees, as well as about 36,000 patients under other major commercial health plans.

The new computer system, called the MC400, is provided by OAO Healthcare Solutions, a California-based technology company serving over 300 clients worldwide. Martin's Point installed the new computer system in June of this year. The new system positioned Martin's Point to offer more advanced functionality, to include Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and a web-based communication network. Martin's Point is currently preparing these enhancements and looks forward to offering them in the near future.

Established in 1981, Martin's Point is a not-for-profit health care provider with facilities in Portland, Brunswick and Windham, Maine, and in Portsmouth, N.H. Martin's Point has a staff of more than 300 health care professionals and serves 54,000 patients ö including military retirees and dependents of active military personnel ö under all major health plans.

Martin's Point serves patients in the areas of family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, radiology, cardiology, and mammography, as well as other fields. For additional information, visit online at www.martinspoint.org.
