Who: Youth aged 9 - 11 who need to stay at home aloneWhat: Martin's Point Health Care is offering a workshop to help boost the confidence and calm the fears of children who are home alone.

Where: Newly renovated health center at MartinĂs Point Health Care,
331 Veranda St. in Portland, on the Casco Bay.
NOTE: This single-session workshop for children aged 9 - 11, is designed to boost their confidence and calm their fears while they are home alone. The class includes discussion and a video presentation, as well as a review of take-home materials dealing with safety and first aid techniques. Registration is required, and there is a $10 fee.

Why: With children out-of-school for the summer, many spend part or all of their days home alone while their parents work. In fact, according to the Urban Institute, a research group in Washington, D.C., 22 percent of U.S. children aged 5 to 14 are left alone at least some of the time.
