Medical Volunteers Needed for TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race

Race organizers reaching out to local medical community for support

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine – Physicians, nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, EMTs and non-medical volunteers are needed to help staff the medical team at the upcoming TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth.

With more than 5000 runners participating in the Saturday, August 4 event, race organizers want to make sure they can provide adequate levels of staffing to treat runners suffering from race-related injuries or heat conditions.

Volunteers can choose to help out before, during or after the race. The TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon also provides professional liability coverage to medical personnel who volunteer.

To volunteer or for more information, contact Angela Best at (207) 272-3545 or bestn92@gmail.com. To register online, go to www.beach2beacon.org and click ‘Volunteer Opportunities.’

Those without Internet access are asked to call (207) 272-3545 to request a volunteer application, or pick up a form at a TD Banknorth branch statewide. Also, minors (under age 18) cannot register online and need to obtain a volunteer form by contacting Ms. Best.

Professional medical personnel are needed to provide an array of treatment, but non-medical volunteers also are needed for tent set up, medical security, transporting ice and water, record keeping and other important tasks, Cohen said.

The TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K, founded by Joan Benoit Samuelson and TD Banknorth, has become one of the marquee events on the international road race circuit, attracting elite athletes worldwide to Maine. The event, which attracts about 10,000 spectators who line the course, requires as many as 850 volunteers each year.

Runners from around the world, New England and Maine will compete in the race that begins at Crescent Beach along Route 77 and ends 6.2 miles later in Fort Williams at Portland Head, the most photographed lighthouse in America.

This year’s race beneficiary is STRIVE, a South Portland-based non-profit organization that serves developmentally disabled youth. For more info, visit www.pslstrive.org.

In addition to TD Banknorth, other major corporate partners this year include Nike, Hannaford, Anthem, Poland Spring, WCSH TV-6, Northeast Delta Dental and MaineHealth. For additional info about the race, visit www.beach2beacon.org or call the race hotline at (888) 480-6940.
