BACKGROUND:

The painting of the start line signifies a major step in the preparation for the annual Peoples Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race to be held August 4.

A field of 4,000, including Maine and New England's top road racers and elite runners from around the world, will compete for $50,000 in prize money. The scenic course, winding through Cape Elizabeth, ends at the Portland Headlight lighthouse at Fort Williams Park. This year, music will line the course to keep spectators and runners entertained.

Now in its fourth year, the Peoples Beach to Beacon was founded by Peoples Heritage Bank and Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson. The youth organization chosen as the 2001 race beneficiary - receiving at least $30,000 in race proceeds - is the Kids First Center, a statewide program that supports Maine parents and children going through divorce or separation.
