TD Beach to Beacon Sports Medicine Symposium in Portland on Aug. 1 Geared for Both Medical Personnel and Runners

Annual pre-race event to focus on Healing and Sports Medicine

PORTLAND, Maine (July 17, 2013) – The highly-skilled medical team for the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race is conducting a Sports Medicine Symposium on Thursday, Aug. 1, aimed at medical personnel as well as runners and anyone interested in fitness.

TD Beach to Beacon Sports Medicine Symposium Aug. 1 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.The free symposium, which will take place at the Dana Center Auditorium at Maine Medical Center from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 1, will focus on Healing and Sports Medicine.

The event is free and open to medical volunteers as well as runners.

The event features speakers covering a range of topics, including:

  • “Nutrition and Healing – What to know about gluten-free, dairy-free and eating to maximize healing” Caroline Apovian, MD, Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Boston University
  • “When your running identity is taken away due to injury, who are you?” Mary Plouffe, PhD, Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Portland
  • “From seeing patients to being a patient – my journey of healing” William Dexter, MD, Assistant Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Program at Maine Medical Center
  • “The B2B Medical Tent—What  to Expect” Chris Troyanos, ATC, TD Beach to Beacon Medical Coordinator; Michael Baumann, MD, Associate Chief of Emergency Medicine at Maine Medical Center; Mylan Cohen, MD, Director of Noninvasive Cardiology, Maine Medical Center

The talks will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

TD Beach to Beacon Sports Medicine Symposium Aug. 1 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.“We’re offering topics that we believe will be of wide interest not only to those in a medical profession but also runners and everyday athletes,” said Chris Troyanos, ATC, Medical Coordinator for both the TD Beach to Beacon 10K and the B.A.A. Boston Marathon.

The event will take place two days before the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, set for Sat., Aug. 3, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The road race is supported by many physicians, nurses and EMTs from across the region who donate their time and expertise in the medical tent at the finish and along the course.

The race is founded by Joan Benoit Samuelson, a Maine native and winner of the first women’s Olympic Marathon gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Since her gold medal performance, Samuelson continues to inspire women runners around the world as well as compete at a high level, setting age-group records and showing that age and injury are not barriers.
