Team of Bicyclists from Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson Crosses $50,000 Mark in Fundraising for MS

Fourteen riders participate in MS 150

PORTLAND, Maine – A team of bicyclists from Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson has crossed the $50,000 fundraising threshold in the effort to help people with MS and find new treatments and a cure for the disease.

Team Bernstein, consisting of 14 lawyers, staff members, spouses and friends, participated in the MS 150 Bike to the Breakwater over two days (July 31 and Aug. 1) this past weekend. The MS 150, a 150-mile bike ride in and around the Sebago Lake area, is one of the MS Society’s major fund raising events in Maine each year. More than 400 riders took part this year.

Bernstein, Shur, which has entered a team for seven consecutive years, has raised more than $50,000 in that span for the Maine Chapter of the National MS Society. The money is used to fund programs in Maine that assist people with MS and their families, and also to fund research on a national level to find new treatments and ultimately a cure for MS

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50 and the unpredictable physical and emotional effects can last a lifetime.

“The ride supports a good cause and it also benefits the riders on the team who get some exercise, have some fun and make a difference,” said Glenn Israel, an attorney at the firm who serves as the team captain and also serves on the Board of Directors of the Maine Chapter of the National MS Society.

Team Bernstein prepares for the event by holding four or five training rides over the summer. Some team members are avid cyclists, he said, and some only ride a few times a year.

Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson is one of northern New England’s largest law firms with 80 attorneys in offices in Portland and Augusta, Maine and Manchester, New Hampshire. The firm provides legal services in all major subject areas, including corporate and commercial law, litigation and trials, municipal and governmental affairs, education law, construction law, employment law and tax and estate planning. Bernstein, Shur also has an active practice in bankruptcy, health law, environmental law, technology and commerce, legislative law, intellectual property, public utilities and other regulated industries.
